Thai floods hit 7 provinces

Floods have hit seven provinces in Thailand claiming lives of at least three people since Monday. The Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge over the Moei River has been closed due to heavy rainfall, the Disaster Relief Department said. Around 25,000 people have been evacuated to relief camps after floods in Karen State, Myanmar . The 2011 Thai floods had claimed lives of at least 815 people. Vietnam floods 2013: Five dead, 200 houses destroyed

Recent Vietnam floods have claimed lives of at least five people and left one other missing, Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control said today. Vietnam floods have left seven others injured and damaged over 200 houses, Flood and Storm Control Committee added. According to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center, the tropical storm Jebi is forecast to move north and northwest in next 24-48 hours. The 2008 Vietnam floods had claimed lives of at least 100 people. Vietnam floods have claimed lives of around 500 in last five years (2008-present). Myanmar Floods 2013: Karen State flooding evacuates 25,000

Around 25,000 people have been evacuated to relief camps after floods in Karen State, Myanmar. Evacuated people are living in 80 different relief camps. Myanmar Floods have also affected people in Mon and Rakhine states. The Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge over the Moei River has been closed due to heavy rainfall, the Disaster Relief Department said. Mission, South Dakota flooding 2013: Over 100 evacuated

Flash flooding in Mission, South Dakota has destroyed many homes and caused the evacuation of over 100 people. Strong storm brought damaging hail, wind, and flash flooding in South Dakota. Evacuated people are taking shelter at the community center in Rosebud, KSFY reported. Tribal Officials are assessing flood damage in South Dakota. Yorkshire floods today: Flood damage in Calder Valley and Todmorden

Extremely heavy rains have caused flood damage in Calder Valley and Todmorden, West Yorkshire. Walsden, near Todmorden in West Yorkshire, England has been hit by up to 18in (46cm) of water. The Environment Agency had issued flood alert for the River Calder and its tributaries from Todmorden to Brighouse. Yorkshire floods today have affected around 20 houses. Several properties in Walsden have suffered flood damage, BBC reported. Half a month's rainfall was recorded in just two hours in Yorkshire. Lightning strike in Dolakha, Nepal has claimed life of one person and injured thirty six others. Lightning struck Bigu-7 in Dolakha district Monday night. The injured people are having treatment at local health institutions,The Himalayan Times reported. Lightning in Nepal claimed lives of five people, including 2 kids in March 2013. Recent floods in Maluku province in eastern Indonesia have claimed lives of at least four people and left six missing, disaster management and mitigation agency said. Rain triggered natural calamities have displaced more than 1,000 people, Xinhua has reported quoting disaster management official. Displaced people from Ambon city are taking shelter in tents and school buildings currently. Italy tornado 2013: Milan tornado injures 12 (Video)

Tornadoes in Milan, Italy have injured at least 12 people and damaged several buildings and vehicles. Tornado hit Grezzago area destroying cars, overturned trucks. Violent storm hit Vaprio, Trezzo and Grezzago (Milan). Firemen, civil protection were involved in rescue operation. The fire brigade, the police and ambulances reached the tornado area immediately. Tornado in Italy injured at least eleven people in May 2013. According to the European Severe Weather Database, twelve tornadoes hit Italy in 2012. K2 Avalanche: 2 New Zealand climbers missing

A father and son from New Zealand are reported to be missing in an avalanche on K2, the second highest mountain in the world. K2 avalanche damaged Camp 3 and left both men missing, Nepalese Sherpas said. They were waiting at Camp 3 for the weather to clear. K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth after Mount Everest located on the border between Pakistan and China. Germany Hailstorm: Wassel hit by Giant hailstones (Video)

A severe hailstorm hit German village of Wassel in Sehnte Saturday evening. German hailstones were the size of tennis balls. Hailstones damaged roofs, windows and several vehicles, local medias reported. The most catastrophic hailstorm in Europe struck Munich, Germany on July 12, 1984. Germany hailstorm damaged some 70,000 homes and injured 400 people. Germany hailstorm damage was estimated at over US$2 billion. Tropical Storm Flossie 2013: Emergency preparedness tips by FEMA

Tropical Storm Flossie is expected to cause flooding and waves up to 18 feet high even mudslides, tornadoes and waterspouts in some areas. According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Flossie 2013 is forecast to make landfall on the northern tip of the Big Island Monday morning. Hawaii Gov. has signed an emergency proclamation in preparation of Tropical Storm Flossie. The U.S. Coast Guard has closed ports on the Big Island and Maui.   The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued a series of emergency preparedness tips for Hawaiians. FEMA has urged residents to listen to the instructions of local officials. Hawaii residents are said to stay away from flood waters and follow the direction of emergency management officials. NC Flooding 2013: 2 killed in Charlotte flooding

NC Flooding 2013 has claimed lives of at least two people. Rain-swollen Wilson Creek swept away two including a 10-year-old girl. NC Creek is located nearly 100 miles north of Charlotte. Flood damage assessment teams have found seven homes and three businesses with major damage. But there are reports of damage to 130 homes and other buildings. A state of emergency has been declared due to widespread flooding in Catawba County, Hickory and Newton . Emergency shelter was opened at the Newton Recreation Center after Catawba County Emergency Management requested the American Red Cross. 2 missing in mudslides, floods in western Japan

At least two people are missing in rain triggered natural calamities in Shimane and Yamaguchi prefectures of western Japan. Heavy rainfall on Sunday morning flooded several houses and roads in the city of Yamaguchi. Japan Meteorological Agency has predicted thunderstorms in Tohoku region overnight. Spanish Mallorca forest fire: Worst fire in 15 years evacuates 700

About 700 people have been evacuated due to forest fire in Mallorca, Spain. Mallorca fire has burned around 1,800 hectares, most of them of either pine forest or low-lying woodland, Xinhua reported quoting government official of the Balearic islands. Mallorca forest fire has affected Es Grau, Ses Tanquetes and Estellenc. About 370 firefighter, civil defense members and the military emergency unit are struggling to control the fire with the help of 24 planes and helicopters. Yemen Flood News: Heavy rain flood streets in Sanaa

Heavy rains caused flood on a street in Sanaa, Yemen, Xinhua reported. Yemen flood closed several roads and trapped some cars in the flood water in capital Sanaa. Floods prompt emergency in Catawba Co., Hickory and Newton

A state of emergency has been declared due to widespread flooding in Catawba County, Hickory and Newton. At least 12 people are living in an emergency shelter at the Newton Recration Center, the Red Cross said. Emergency shelter was opened after Catawba County Emergency Management requested the American Red Cross. The Hickory area received between 4 and 6 inches of rainfall Saturday morning, the National Weather Service. Similarly about 8 inches of rainfall have been recorded in Newton and Conover. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch and flood advisory. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding, downed trees and power lines in Catawba County, wsoctv reported. Floods, landslide in Gorontalo, Indonesia: 4 killed, State of emergency declared

Floods and landslide in Gorontalo, Indonesia have claimed lives of at least four people and left three others missing, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said. Rain triggered natural calamities in Indonesia have damaged several buildings and displaced more than 600 residents. Heavy rainfall caused the Tongo River to overflow its banks and hit the Bone Pantai and Bulawa area. Road linking to Ombulo Hijau village, in Bone Pantai has been washed away. Flood alerts in Hawaii as tropical storm Flossie nears

Flood alerts have been issued by Hawaii State Civil Defense following a tropical storm Flossie. As of 03:00 UTC Saturday, tropical storm Flossie was located 2070 km E of Hilo Hawaii. Hawaii authorities has issued an alert for "torrential" rains and dangerous flash floods early next week. Tropical storm Flossie has a 5 percent chance to grow into a hurricane. A National Weather Service projection has forecasts tropical storm Flossie passing directly over Hawaii early Tuesday. There is high danger of flash floods, mudslides and rockslides due to tropical storm Flossie, NBC News reported. Tropical Storm Flossie is the sixth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season. Severe flooding in Ireland's Letterkenny hospital, emergency declared

An emergency situation has been declared after severe flooding in Ireland's Letterkenny General Hospital. Emergency was followed after a tributary of the River Swilley overflowed and caused flooding around 17:00 BST Friday. Seventy bed emergency unit has been opened for the evacuated people and crisis management team has been activated, RTE News reported. Heavy rains have even caused flash flooding in parts of Dublin , Wicklow and Westmeath. Earthquakes today: Bulgaria hit by several earthquakes

Update 04:05 UTC Two more light earthquakes have hit Bulgaria. Recent ones are slightly stronger with magnitude 4 plus. Magnitude 4.3 earthquake hit 13 km S of Bansko at 03:22 UTC. The twin earthquakes today hit Bulgaria's Blagoevgrad area, European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. The tremors in Bulgaria - with magnitudes of 3.9 and 3.5 hit in an interval of around 20 minutes. The first 3.9-magnitude quake struck at 01:24 UTC located 11 km SE of Blagoevgrad and the second, measuring 3.5-magnitude, hit in the same region at 01:48 UTC, according to the EMSC. Both Bulgarian earthquakes today were 7.7 miles deep. No damage or injury has been reported from Bulgaria earthquakes. Landslide in Gansu province of China has claimed lives of at least seven people and left fifteen others missing. Heavy rainfall has caused landslide in Liujiahe village of Tianshui city in Gansu province of China about 9:30 a.m, the provincial emergency response office said. Similarly floods have also damaged roads linking the Niangniangba township, Xinhua News reported. Gansu is the same area where very strong earthquake hit the area some days ago claiming lives of at least 95 people. White Island volcano in New Zealand shows minor volcanic activity

White Island volcano in New Zealand has shown a minor volcanic activity, GNS Science said. GNS Science has raised the alert to level one and the aviation code to yellow. White Island volcano is ejecting debris 20 to 30 metres into the air, THe New Zealand Herald has written quoting a Volcanologist. However the increase in White Island volcanic activity is not related to the Cook Strait earthquakes. Maluku dam collapse in Indonesia kills 1, injures 32: Disaster Mitigation Agency

Maluku dam collapse in Indonesia has claimed life on at least one and injured thirty two others, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said today. Torrential rain and floods caused the Maluka dam to collapse leaving one dead and another missing. Out of thirty two, eight people are reported to be seriously injured. Around 5,200 people have been evacuated from a village near Ambon. More than 400 mm of rain was recorded in 24h locally which caused the dam to break in Way Ela, central Maluku. Dublin flood, storm cause chaos, thousands without power

Heavy rains and thunderstorms have caused flooding in Dublin, Ireland leaving thousands of homes without power. Torrential rainfall in Dublin has also collapsed parts of the roof at the Mater Hospital. Similarly roof of Clery's department store in Dublin also fell down. Luckily there were no injuries. Dublin flood has affected several houses and businesses in Middleton in Co Cork. Ballincurra village is reported to be worst hit. Lightning in Arizona has claimed lives of two people and injured a teenage. A lightning bolt hit a married couple and the boy at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the LeFevre Scenic Outlook, Arizona. Injured boy is not associated with the dead couple. According to the Encyclopedia of World Climatology, lightning happens about 40–50 times per second worldwide. Jaw dropping video of China landslide

This Jaw dropping video footage shows a huge landslide in Sichuan province of China. More than 1,400 people have been evacuated following the Sichuan landslide. The landslide has swept away 28 houses and 6.6 hectares of farmland in the Caopo Township. In the video, huge mass of mountain slopes pouring down can be clearly seen. Central California earthquake today: 4.3 quake near Weldon, east of Bakersfield

M 4.3 light earthquake shakes Central California today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of Central California earthquake today was located 19 km S of Weldon. It was 1.9 miles deep. According to the USGS Pager Map, weak shaking will have been felt by the people of Weldon, Lake Isabella, Tehachapi, Wofford Heights, Kernville, Bodfish, Bakersfield and Lancaster. The largest recorded earthquake in California was the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake of magnitude 8.0. That earthquake ruptured the San Andreas Fault from Parkfield to Wrightwood. Note that the town of Parkfield is in central California which produces an earthquake of about magnitude 6 + every 20–30 years. The 2003 Working Group for California Earthquake Probability assigned a 21% probability that the San Andreas Fault would produce a magnitude 6.7 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years. Heat alert in Hungary

The National Medical Office has issued a second-degree heat alert in Hungary effective today. The dry weather will arrive in the Carpathian Basin this weekend, the National Weather Service said. Around 40C is possible in western Hungary Sunday. Roads in Budapest will be cooled during the night, The Budapest Times reported. The Hungarian Grand Prix, a motor race held annually in Hungary will also have to deal with the temperature monitoring system. Basement flooding, sinkholes in Mount Holly, Pennsylvania

Torrential rains have caused basement flooding and sinkholes in Mount Holly, Pennsylvania. Flood damage has been reported in at least two houses in Mount Holly. Cherry Street was shut down after several sinkholes along the Street. Four other homes along the street experienced basement flooding and sinkholes. According to the National Weather Service, storm has dumped more than six inches of rains in just one and half hours. People in Mount Holly, Pennsylvania are now busy in flooded basement repair and flood cleanup. No injury has been reported. Flash flooding and lightning damages have been reported across England and Scotland today. Lightning damaged several buildings including a historic church near Bury, Greater Manchester. Lightning also damaged a signalling system in Manchester Piccadilly station. Lightning strikes affecting signals disrupted train services in Scotland. Mudslides in Shaanxi province of China have claimed seven lives and injured four others, Xinhua News reported. Heavy rainfall triggered mudslides in Fuxian and Yanchang counties, flood control and drought relief headquarters said. South Korea flood claims 4

Flooding in South Korea has claimed lives of at least four people. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and mudslides in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province of South Korea. Eight primary and secondary schools in Gyeonggi Province have been closed due to the overflowing Gonjiam Stream, Chosun Ilbo reported. Flood waters also swept away over 40 vehicles in a parking lot in the Tan Stream. In neighbouring North Korea, floods have left 8 dead or missing. According to the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea flood has caused huge flood damage in central part of the country leading to five deaths and three missing. North Korea flood leaves 8 dead or missing

Floods in North Korea have left eight dead or missing and made more than 23,000 people homeless. According to the Korean Central News Agency, torrential rains have caused huge flood damage in central part of the country leading to five deaths and three missing. North Korea flood has damaged more than 6,060 dwelling houses. Up to 413 mm rainfall has been recorded in Tongsin county over three days, Agence France-Presse has reported quoting weather service officials. The South Korean Red Cross has also provided US$ 100,000 flood aid to the North Korea flood victims. In neighbouring South Korea, floods have claimed lives of four people. South Korea flood also swept away over 40 vehicles in a parking lot in the Tan Stream. Harrisonburg lightning injures 3

Lightning strike in Harrisonburg, United States has injured at least three people. Lightning occurred around 2 p.m on the 200 block of Green Street, WHSV-TV3 reported. Following the Harrisonburg Police department, the three people were in a tree when lightning struck. Injured people are having treatment at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Phoenix flood prompts flood emergency

Heavy downpour has caused flooding in Phoenix leading to flash flood emergency. Flood water swept away several vehicles and stranded people in their homes. Emergency crews were busy in rescue works. Emergency crews have saved nine stranded people in Phoenix flood. The heavy rainfall hit southern Arizona, prompting flash-flood warnings for parts of Maricopa and Pinal counties, The Arizona Republic said. Mt Merapi volcano in Indonesia spews ash

Smoke and ash from Mount Merapi volcano in Indonesia today has forced hundreds of people to flee their villages. Indonesian volcano Merapi spewed a column of dark red volcanic material 1,000 meters into the air, disaster mitigation agency said. The 2010 Mount Merapi eruptions claimed lives of 353 leading to emergency preparedness plans. Mt Merapi is an active volcano located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Gansu earthquake 2013 (updates, pictures, videos)

M 5.9 very strong earthquake has hit Gansu, China. The China Earthquake Administration has launched an emergency-response plan after this deadly Gansu earthquake. The National Committee for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs has also launched a level-four emergency response and sent work teams to the quake zone. Landslides across Nepal have claimed  lives of at least seven people and injured six others in last 24 hours. Landslide disasters have been reported in Palpa, Myagdi, Syangja and Dolakha districts of Nepal. Three persons, including two children died in landslide in Palpa. Rain triggered natural calamities hit Khanichap-7, Aamdanda area of Palpa district. Landslides in Myagdi and Syangja claimed two lives each. At least six people are reported missing in Dolakha and Syangja, Nepal News has reported quoting districts Police. Five of a family have gone missing in Dolakha landslide. Update Earthquake in Gansu, China has claimed more lives. Now death toll remains at 53. Gansu earthquake has injured at least 337 people, China Central Television (CCTV) reported. Flood in Punjab, Pakistan caused after heavy rainfall has claimed lives of at least three people and injured nine others. Punjab flood claimed two women in Pasrur village and a child in Shakargarh’s Tola village. At least three people were injured due to house collapse in Kot Abdul Malik city of Lahore and six others were injured in Tola village. The Punjab flood forecasting division has warned of very high flood in Jhelum river at Mangla and Chenab at Marala today. The Met office has recorded the heaviest rain in Islamabad over the past 24 hours. About 217mm of rainfall has been recorded in Saidpur, Dawn Media reported. Wellington emergency management office activated after severe earthquake today in New Zealand

According to Wellington City Council's emergency management office, earthquake has also caused some damage to a council building in Wakefield Street. M 4.9 moderate earthquake shakes eastern coast of Italy today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Tornado in Ohio: Ursuline College closes after heavy damage

A tornado has hit Ursuline College in northeast Ohio about 3:35 a.m. Saturday morning collapsing a wall of the athletic center and other buildings. According to the National Weather Service, EF1 twister with 110 mph winds hit Ursuline College located about 13 miles east of Cleveland. Tornado damage has been worst at Ursuline's O'Brien Athletic Center. Other three buildings were also damaged including the Dauby Science Center and the Ralph M. Besse Library. Floods, landslides in Kailali and Dolakha displace over 2,000 families

Floods and landslides in Kailali and Dolakha districts of Nepal have displaced more than 2,000 families, local medias reported. Rain triggered natural calamities have displaced more than 2,000 families in different parts of Kailali including Dhangadhi, Nepalnews reported. A tropical wave passing over Puerto Rico has caused heavy flooding in Puerto Rico, emergency management office said today. Tropical wave caused lightning, flooding and knocked down several tress and light posts, emergency management office added. San Juan's main international airport has recorded nearly five inches of rainfall, AFP reported. Several flights at the Luis Munoz Marin international airport were delayed. Namibia African Drought: Worst in 30 years

Worst drought in 30 years has hit Namibia, United Nation said today. According to the UN, more than 100,000 children at risk of malnutrition in Namibia. Drought has caused shortages of food and water mainly in Kavango, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Kunene. So an drought emergency appeal has also been made to support the Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS) to assist vulnerable people in these areas. Wild weather across South Australia, 28,000 without power

Severe weather with strong winds have downed trees across parts of South Australia, emergency service said. More than 28,000 homes and businesses in South Australia have lost power in high winds. Ecuador Reventador Volcano eruption intensifies

Lava flow and ash and gas emissions have intensified at the Ecuador Reventador volcano, Geophysics Institute said. Though the lava flow on southern flank has increased since Saturday, it currently poses no immediate threat to villagers, Ecuador's Geophysics Institute added. About 500 lightning strikes hit Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho overnight. Trace of rains have been recorded with thunderstorms relatively high above 10,000 feet, Komo News reported. CA Wildfire burns 7 houses, U.S. Forest Service says

A wildfire in mountains west of Palm Springs, California has burned at least seven houses and about a half-dozen vehicles, the U.S. Forest Service said. Bulgaria coal mine landslide claims 2

A landslide in a coal mine in Bulgaria has claimed lives of at least two people and left others two missing. Bodies of miners were found buried in mud and rocks underneath 50 meters of land masses. Fire trucks and ambulances have already reached the site, Sofia News Agency reported. Coal mine landslide occurred at 9:45 a.m. local time in the Oranovo mine near Simitli town. Heat alerts across U.S. Northeast

Heat warnings, advisories and alerts have been issued across the U.S. East Coast as heat wave begins. A heat advisory has been issued for New York City until midnight Tuesday by the National Weather Service. More than 400 cooling centers are opened, Office of Emergency Management (OEM) said. Similarly heat warnings and advisories are in effect across much of eastern Pennsylvania, The Weather Channel reported. Cooling centers are opened in several communities of Connecticut too. The health officials have declared a Code Red Heat Alert in Maryland . Heat alert will last till Friday. According to Baltimore City Health Department, cooling centers on Code Red Heat Alert days will be opened from 9 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends. Typhoon Soulik kills 5 in China, Taiwan

Typhoon Soulik has claimed lives of at least five people in China and Taiwan. The typhoon claimed three lives in Guangdong province of China, Xinhua reported. Update 17:00 UTC Death toll from Typhoon Soulik has risen to two with more than 104 injured. One person is still reported to be missing. Typhoon Soulik has made landfall in Fujian Province of China. Soulik made landfall on the Huangqi Peninsula in Lianjiang County at 4 p.m. Typhoon Soulik in Taiwan has claimed life of at least one people and injured 21 others, disaster emergency center said. Disaster emergency center has identified the person as a 50 year old policeman from Taipei.  The Central Emergency Operation Centre has already moved more than eight thousand people from their homes. All schools and offices in Taiwan are closed today and Several Airlines including Cathay Pacific and China Airlines have cancelled their flights to Taiwan. Flooded river engulfs 9 kids in India

Flooded tributary of the Kosi river in Bihar, India has claimed lives of 10 people including nine kids, Indian News medias reported. A boat carrying 11 people got capsized in Madhepura in a flooded tributary of Kosi River. Nearby villagers could only save a girl. Tragedy happened at around 10.30 pm Thursday night when they were returning from Pandit Basa village after attending a function. Among the fatalities are five girls and four boys between 8 to 12 years age, NDTV has written quoting District Magistrate Upendra Kumar. Recent floods in Bihar have affected  more than 100 villages with worst in Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, Muzaffarpur and Katihar, disaster management official said. 2008 Kosi flood, the worst flood in Bihar in the last 50 years, made more than three million people homeless. Flash floods in Odisha and Hyderabad state of India have claimed lives of at least three people and left two missing. Four people were swept away by flood waters in Kudumuluguma area of Malkangiri district. Two of them are still reported to be missing. According to the Web India who has quoted Revenue and Disaster Management Department official, the Malkangiri district is reported to be worst affected by flood. Similarly flood waters hit a house and swept away six members of a family in Hyderabad.
