Drought in China's Jiangxi province prompts Orange Alert

October 16, 2019: An orange alert for drought has been issued in the east China's Jiangxi Province as a response to decreasing precipitation. According to the Xinhua , the average precipitation in the province stood at 96 mm from late July to early October, about 70% less than the average in the previous years. In Shanxi province, the Ministries of finance and emergency management has allocated an emergency funding of about 10.2 million U.S. dollars for drought relief. Severe drought condition in Swaziland prompts national emergency

Swaziland Government has declared a national emergency for the current drought situation, primarily caused by the cyclical dry weather phenomenon known as El Nino . The Prime Minister, Dr B. Sibusiso Dlamini, said that "the negative impact of the drought has led to seriously diminished water availability for crop production, human consumption and livestock sustenance" in a statement at the launch of the national emergency response, mitigation and adaptation plan and declaration of national emergency at the cabinet offices in February 2016.

Ethiopia drought relief efort needs $500M

The drought relief effort in Ethiopia needs about $500 million to support programmes beyond April aimed at providing support to 10.2 million people facing severe food shortage, the U.N. World Food Programme said on Thursday. The El Niño weather system, on the back of 12 to 18 months of erratic or failed rains, has caused the worst drought in Ethiopia since the mid 1980s. Parts of Ethiopia are facing the worst drought in thirty years.

South Africa drought — Two provinces declaring disaster areas

Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces of South Africa will be declared drought disaster areas this week or next, risk management in the department of agriculture said on Wednesday. South Africa is facing its worst drought since 1982, with more than 2.7 million households facing water shortages across the country, Lennox Mabaso, spokesperson for the local government department in KwaZulu-Natal, told Al Jazeera .

Parkland County council has declared a state of agricultural disaster during the July 14th Parkland County Council meeting. “These extreme drought conditions are devastating crops across Parkland County,” Mayor Rod Shaigec said in a news release Tuesday. “Council wants to make it clear to our agricultural community that we understand, and will provide all means of support possible. By declaring a state of agricultural disaster, we hope to call attention to this extremely important issue.”

North Korea has been hit by the worst drought in a century causing fears of chronic food shortages. North Korea suffered a devastating famine in the 1990s and has relied on international food aid where the United Nations says almost a third of children under five are stunted because of poor nutrition, Reuters reported.

Tharparkar drought in Pakistan kills 40

Drought in Pakistan has claimed lives of at least 40 people in last 28 days. Recently six children died in Mithi, Chhachhro, Nagarparkar, Islamkot and other areas of the Tharparkar district in Sindh province, Pakistan Today reported.. Farmers are facing poor rainfall for almost five successive years in Tharparkar district of Pakistan. The ongoing drought has claimed more than 500 lives in three years. The provincial government had also appealed to foreign donors to help mitigate the drought situation last year.

Namibia African Drought: Worst in 30 years

Worst drought in 30 years has hit Namibia, United Nation said today. According to the UN, more than 100,000 children at risk of malnutrition in Namibia. Drought has caused shortages of food and water mainly in Kavango, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Kunene. So an drought emergency appeal has also been made to support the Namibia Red Cross Society (NRCS) to assist vulnerable people in these areas. Namibia Government has already declared a national emergency in May and designated $20 million drought relief for the worst-hit households. Namibia has also appealed to the international community for assistance. Taking President Hifikepunye Pohamba words, "Namibia is experiencing the wrath of mother nature in the form of a devastating drought." Report published in July had put over 300,000 people in food insecure list. Over 4,000 livestock deaths were recorded then. Namibia normally imports about 50% of its cereal requirements.
