Floods prompt emergency in Catawba Co., Hickory and Newton

A state of emergency has been declared due to widespread flooding in Catawba County, Hickory and Newton.

At least 12 people are living in an emergency shelter at the Newton Recration Center, the Red Cross said. Emergency shelter was opened after Catawba County Emergency Management requested the American Red Cross.

The Hickory area received between 4 and 6 inches of rainfall Saturday morning, the National Weather Service. Similarly about 8 inches of rainfall have been recorded in Newton and Conover.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch and flood advisory.

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding, downed trees and power lines in Catawba County, wsoctv reported.

Officials are collecting Catawba County flood damage data through a website.
