909 people killed by Natural disasters in China in 2019

January 20, 2020: A total of 909 people have been killed by natural disasters in China in 2019, with about 130 million more people adversely impacted. According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, natural disasters in China caused about 47.5 billion U.S. dollars direct economic losses in 2019. China was hit mainly by floods, typhoons, drought and earthquakes in 2019. However, the overall impact of natural disasters in China in 2019 was smaller than the average for the past five years, with lesser death toll as well. Global natural disaster losses in 2019 Meanwhile, more than 11,000 were killed in natural disaster events in 2019. Magnitude 8 or greater earthquake predicted near Kathmandu, Nepal

December 5, 2016: A research paper published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters claims fault near Kathmandu could produce magnitude 8 or greater earthquake. An international team, including researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno warned Kathmandu and other areas along the Himalayan Frontal Fault could be due for an even more powerful event.   Researchers dug two deep trenches near the mouths of major rivers at Tribeni and Bagmati and studied soils and fault lines looking back over the past 2,000 years.

World Bank to open centers for managing natural disaster in Kerala

Kerala government is collaborating with World Bank to establish four centers for managing natural disaster in India . According to the state disaster management authority, multipurpose cyclone risk mitigation centres will be set up at Kumbaanghi, Njarakkal, Kovilakathu Kadavu and Puthenvelikkara regions of Kerala.

Scotland formally launched the country's first national flood risk management plan on Monday. Flash floods in Kenya's Homa Bay have claimed lives of at least seven people including a seven month old baby. Victims were swept by heavy flash floods as they attempted to cross the bridges in Gongo and Kotieno, HomaBay police commander John Omusanga confirmed the Xinhua News Agency .

Damaging tornado in Illinois today kills 1 – Fairdale hit hardest

A powerful damaging tornado in Illinois today has claimed life of a person and injured seven others. At least one person died in Fairdale with tornado damage reported on either side of Interstate 39 near Rochelle, Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reported.
