Sandstorm blankets China, blue alert issued

Much of China's northwest regions were blanketed by sandstorm on Wednesday evening.

Many areas in the Beijing recorded PM10 air pollution causing traffic jams in most major districts of the city, South China Morning Post reported.

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) had forecast parts of Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Beijing, Tianjin, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and Jilin to be affected by sandstorm.

The national weather observatory had earlier issued a blue alert for sandstorms, forecasting sandy and dusty weather in China's northwest regions, Xinhua reported.

Strong winds are expected in Beijing until Thursday afternoon.
