Damaging tornado in Illinois today kills 1 – Fairdale hit hardest

A powerful damaging tornado in Illinois today has claimed life of a person and injured seven others.

At least one person died in Fairdale with tornado damage reported on either side of Interstate 39 near Rochelle, Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to the USA Today, recent weather forced the cancellation of more than 800 flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and delayed hundreds more.

Preliminary reports have shown the hardest hit to be the tiny hamlet of Fairdale, Ill., south of Rockford.

“Fairdale is pretty well destroyed, from what I understand,” the Chicago Tribune mentioned quoting Les Bellah, village president of nearby Kirkland, Ill as saying.

"Every single" one of the approximately 50 structures in Fairdale has been damaged by tornado injuring at least seven people, Rockford Fire Department division chief Matthew Knott told ABC7-TV.

According to The Illinois Office of Emergency Management, large tornado began near Ashton, Illinois, around 6:40 p.m. CDT Thursday. The Weather Channel aired the live telecast of tornado in Illinois today. Significant damages have also been reported in the towns of Kings and Hillcrest.

Multiple tornadoes have been reported Wednesday and early Thursday in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Tornadoes that hit central and southern Illinois in November 2013 claimed several lives and caused massive damage.
