Indonesia: Floods, landslides in Sumatra kill 7

January 29, 2020: Floods and landslides on Indonesia 's Sumatra island have claimed lives of at least seven people and displaced thousand others. Also, 22 have been injured in Central Tapanuli Regency due to the overflow of the Aek Sirahar river.  According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, more than 2,000 people have been forced to leave their flooded homes. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Central Tapanuli Regency has declared a 7-day state of emergency .

Cayman Islands earthquake 2020: Magnitude 7.7 earthquake triggers tsunami wave

January 28, 2020: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 has struck in the Caribbean, prompting brief tsunami warnings and office evacuations as far away as Florida. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake hit between Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba at a depth of 10 km. Offices were temporarily evacuated in Miami and parts of Jamaica. A tsunami of 0.4 feet was recorded in the Cayman Islands at George Town, but no tsunami was observed at Port Royal, Jamaica, or Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The quake hit 125 kilometers (77.6 miles) north-northwest of Lucea in Jamaica. There are no initial reports of damage or casualties. Massive flooding in Madagascar kills 31 — National emergency declared

January 27, 2020: The government of Madagascar has declared a national emergency after a week long flooding claimed lives of 31 people and displaced more than 16,000 people. According to the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), recent floodings have inundated more than 10,000 homes, with 46 totally destroyed. At least seven regions in the north of the country have been affected, with Boeny, Sofia and Alaotra Mangoro hardest hit. President Andry Rajoelina called it "a day of devastation" across the island. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Government has deployed two helicopters to conduct aerial surveillance of the flooded areas and support the evacuation of people at risk. The death toll may rise in the days ahead, as several people remain missing.

5.2 magnitude earthquake in Shiraz, Iran today

January 27, 2020: Magnitude 5.2 earthquake has been felt in Shiraz, Iran today at 04:28 pm. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake's epicenter was located around 46 km far from Shiraz, Fars, Iran. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. Light shaking of MMI IV has been felt in Kāzerūn and Shiraz. According to the Iran's Red Crescent, assessment teams have been dispatched to the quake site.

Flooding and landslides in Minas Gerais, Brazil kill 30

January 26, 2020: Flooding and landslides in southeast Brazil have claimed lives of at least 30 people. Around 2,600 people have been evacuated from their houses in Minas Gerais state. Belo Horizonte Civil Defence said that teams attended over 470 incidents of landslides and flooding across the region on 24 January, 2020. The Brazilian weather service Inmet said that in the past two days, the regional capital Belo Horizonte had seen the most intense rainfall recorded in more than 100 years.  More rain is expected in Minas Gerais as well as other parts of Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

M4.4 earthquake hits Jaggayyapeta — Tremor felt as far as Hyderabad, India

January 26, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 has been recorded in Jaggayyapeta, Andhra Pradesh, India at around 2:35 am local time. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicenter was located 27 km far from Jaggayyapeta, Andhra Pradesh, India. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. The tremor lasted for around 6 seconds in Jaggayyapeta area. People rushed out of their houses with fear in the epicenter area. However,no damage or injuries have been reported. Light to weak tremors were felt in some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The earthquake of light intensity with MMI IV was felt in Jaggayyapeta, Kodad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Nandigama, Sattenapalle and Miryalaguda. These all places lies within 50 km of the epicenter area. Similarly the tremor was felt in Khammam, Gudivada, Jangaon, Warangal, Uppal Kalan and as far as Hyderabad. 

Elazig, Turkey Earthquake 2020: At least 19 dead, more than 600 injured

January 25, 2020: At least 19 people have been killed and more than 600 have been injured in eastern Turkey after an earthquake rattled Elazig on Friday evening at 08:55 pm. The 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Sivrice, in eastern Elazig province of Turkey . The earthquake was felt in neighboring provinces of Elazığ, Diyarbakır, Malatya, Adıyaman and Samsun. Kandilli Observatory revised the size of the earthquake to 6.5. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), thirteen people were killed in Elazig province, four in Malatya, one in Diyarbakir and one in another area. January 23, 2020: Flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have affected the departments of Arequipa and Huanuco in Peru . Flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc in Uchumayo district damaging more than 80 homes. Roads have been closed in the departments of Lima, Ayacucho, and Moquegua. Two weeks ago, flooding killed two people in departments of Pasco and Puno.

Flooding in Mozambique kills 28 dead — Leaves 58,000 affected

January 23, 2020: Flooding in Mozambique since December 2019 has claimed lives of at least 28 people, injuring 66 and affecting more than 58,000. The worst flood hit provinces have been identified as Zambezia, Cabo Delgado and Sofala where around 17,432 people, 13,169 and 6,328 have been affected respectively.  Flooding disaster damaged more than 10,200 houses. National Disaster Management Institute (INGC) has provided assistance to around 10,000 people.

3.0 magnitude earthquake rattles Stockton-on-Tees, Durham today: BGS

January 23, 2020: Magnitude 3.0 earthquake has been recorded in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham today at just before 6 a.m., the British Geological Survey (BGS) reported. The earthquake occurred at 4 km depth. The tremor was felt across Stockton, Billingham, Hartlepool, Wolviston and Middlesbrough. According to BGS, more than 370 reports has been received from people who felt the earthquake in Stockton-on-Tees today. Typical reports described, "woke me up, felt like someone had crashed into the house with a car", "single shock felt like an explosion nearby", "it felt like the house was lifting from its foundations. Storm Gloria in Spain kills 9, leaves four missing

January 23, 2020: Storm Gloria has claimed lives of nine people and left four other missing in Spain. More than 200,000 people are without power and weather alerts have been activated in around 33 provinces. The Spanish meteorological agency has placed 33 of its 55 provinces on high alert. Teruel Albacete, Murcia, Barcelona, Tarragon, Girona, Castellon, and Alicante province have been kept on red alert. The storm is now moving across the Pyrenees, bringing heavy snow to the mountains. Forecasters had predicted the storm would ease by Wednesday.

Taal volcano eruption update: January 22, 2020

January 22, 2020:  Taal volcano erupted white steam-laden plumes up to 500 meters high from its main crater in Philippines. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a total of 725 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded in Taal region as of January 22, 2020. Around 176 earthquakes were felt ranging from magnitude 1.2 - 4.1 and intensity of I-V. Looking the forecast of Taal volcano, if the eruption column remains at 3.0 km or below, the ash plumes will be drifted to the municipalities southwest and west of Taal volcano. A total 71,717 families were affected in the provinces of Batangas, Queszon, Laguna and Cavite. A total of 64 flights were reported cancelled due to the volcanic ash from Taal volcano. A level 4 alert is still in effect from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Technology (PHIVOLCS).

909 people killed by Natural disasters in China in 2019

January 20, 2020: A total of 909 people have been killed by natural disasters in China in 2019, with about 130 million more people adversely impacted. According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, natural disasters in China caused about 47.5 billion U.S. dollars direct economic losses in 2019. China was hit mainly by floods, typhoons, drought and earthquakes in 2019. However, the overall impact of natural disasters in China in 2019 was smaller than the average for the past five years, with lesser death toll as well. Global natural disaster losses in 2019 Meanwhile, more than 11,000 were killed in natural disaster events in 2019. Nine killed as flash flood destroys bridge in Bengkulu, Indonesia

January 20, 2020: Nine people have been killed after flash flood destroyed a bridge in Kaur regency in Bengkulu, Indonesia . Kaur Disaster Mitigation Agency estimated around 30 people on the bridge when it collapsed. One people has been still missing. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the flash flood was caused by extreme weather and rainfall intensity.

Storm Gloria kills 4 in Spain — 33 province on high alert

January 21, 2020: The powerful storm Gloria caused strong winds and heavy snowfall in Spain claiming lives of four people. Fatalities have been reported in Asturias, Gandia, Avila and Moixent. The Spanish meteorological agency has placed 33 of its 55 provinces on high alert. Teruel Albacete, Murcia, Barcelona, Tarragon, Girona, Castellon, and Alicante province have been kept on red alert. Heavy flooding and strong storm severely affected Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Storm Gloria has has now reached Pyrénées-Orientales, southernmost Mediterranean department of France.

Severe weather in Afghanistan kills 13, injures 40

January 20, 2020: Severe weather in Afghanistan has claimed lives of 13 people and injured forty others. According to the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS), around 655 houses have been partially damaged, 30 houses are completely destroyed and 322 families have been displaced to the safe places. Heavy snowfall, flooding and a large number of avalanches were reported in different parts of Afghanistan between 12 -15 January 2020. Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Laghman, Herat, Badghis, Ghor, Daykundi, Bamyan and Baghlan provinces in Afghanistan are badly affected by the recent weather related disasters in Afghanistan . Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authorities (ANDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Committees (PDMCs) are working for disaster response in the affected areas.

Mabini, Batangas earthquake measures 4.2 in magnitude: Phivolcs

January 19, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 has been recorded in Mabini, Batangas on Sunday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. According to the Phivolcs, the earthquake's epicenter was located 5 kilometers south of Mabini.The earthquake was tectonic in origin. The earthquake intensity I was felt in Tagaytay City. We also don't expect any damage from this earthquake. Apart from this, no severe earthquake is possible in this area. The fault line in Mabini lies underneath a volcano and is only capable of generating moderate-sized earthquakes.

January 17, 2020: Puerto Rico Meteor streaks over the Island

January 17, 2020: A meteor streaked low across the sky in Puerto Rico on Friday. The National Weather Service satellite captured the meteor image at around 4:30 p.m. EST time Friday. The event was unusual as meteors are typically not visible during the day because the sky is too bright with sunlight. Many of the meteor images were posted from the San Juan and Carolina area. Flooding in Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique kills six

January 16, 2020: Recent floodings in Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique have claimed lives of at least six people and left three others missing. Floodwater has affected Muidumbe, Nangade, Mueda and Palma e Mocímboa da Praia districts of northern Mozambique. In December 2019, heavy downpour washed away a bridge on Montepuez river (Cabo Delgato). Also in 2019, t ropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth caused damage in Mozambique.

Flooding in Samarinda, Indonesia prompts evacuation

January 16, 2020: Recent flooding in Samarinda area of Indonesia has caused evacuation of people to nearby shelter set up by the BPBD and some to the mosque.  Floods triggered by heavy rainfall have submerged Samarinda City affecting at least 7,213 residents. Samarinda Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported no casualties.

77 killed and 94 injured in avalanches in Neelum Valley, Pakistan

January 16, 2020: At least 77 people have been killed and 94 others have been injured due to recent avalanches in northeast Pakistan. The avalanches were triggered by heavy snowfall in the Neelum Valley, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Tropical Cyclone Tino to affect Fiji and Tonga

January 14, 2020: A storm in the Pacific is expected to become a tropical cyclone 'Tino' by Wednesday or Thursday. A tropical disturbance is located 1,670 km to the north-west of Fiji or 760 kilometres west-northwest of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu. The system is expected to intensify into Tropical Cyclone Tino on 15 January 2020. Warnings are being issued in Fiji and Tonga with fears both islands are in line to be directly hit by a tropical cyclone. The system is anticipated to enter Fijian waters on January 17, 2020.

RUMOR spreads about 4.1 magnitude earthquake in Dover, Delaware today

January 13, 2020: A news became viral about 4.1 magnitude earthquake near Dover, Delaware at about 4:47pm today. People were surprised to read the news as they didn't feel any tremor in Delaware today. The earthquake news is just a rumor and viral hoax . The news claimed that the earthquake was felt along the U.S. East Coast from Massachusetts to central Virginia, including New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. We found that the earthquake news that went viral today was pulled from a post back in November 2017. This was actually an old post of the earthquake being shared online that rattled Delaware in November 2017. But people started sharing the earthquake news without looking the mentioned date.  We even confirmed with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) that there was no earthquake recorded in Dover, Delaware today. Taal volcano eruption 2020 prompts evacuation, ashfall reaches Manila

Ongoing phreatic explosion at the Main Crater  of Taal Volcano (@phivolcs_dost) January 12, 2020: The Taal volcano eruption in Philippines has spewed ash and prompted evacuations in nearby communities on Sunday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised its alert level for Taal Volcano to four out of five. The alert system has five levels with Alert Level 5 meaning a hazardous eruption is in progress. CNN Philippines reported from its twitter handle (@cnnphilippines) that the ashfall was reported in metro Manila, located about 101 km north of the Taal volcano. January 12, 2020: Heavy snowfall has claimed lives of at least 16 people in Herat and Kandahar region of Afghanistan . Recent snowfall killed eight people in Kandahar and injured 16 others. At least eight people died in Herat. According to the Afghanistan's Natural Disaster Management Authority, the death toll from the snowfall would further rise in coming days. Storm damage in Louisiana today: Three killed and damage from Texas to Tennessee

January 11, 2020:  Severe storm in Louisiana has claimed lives of three people and caused damage from Texas to Tennessee. Two people died in a storm near Haughton when their mobile home was destroyed. Third person died when a tree fell on the house in Oil City. In Arkansas and Missouri, tornadoes destroyed homes and also caused damage in Oklahoma. A tornado destroyed two homes near Fair Play, Missouri, about 56 km northwest of Springfield. According to the Logan County Emergency Management, at least three homes were destroyed by the tornado in Arkansas. Istanbul Earthquake 2020: M4.8 earthquake rattles Istanbul and Marmara region

January 11, 2020: Magnitude 4.8 moderate earthquake has rattled Istanbul and the Marmara region today at 04:37 pm local time, Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute reported. According to the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute,the earthquake's epicenter was located 63 km far from İstanbul, Turkey .  The earthquake occurred at 16 km depth. Mexico: Popocatepetl volcano last eruption spews ash 9,800ft high

January 10, 2020: Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano erupted on Thursday with lava and cloud of ash and rocks that reached 9,800ft (3,000m) into the sky. National Civil Protection Coordination of Mexico has issued a yellow alert for the area around San Nicolás de los Ranchos. According to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington, the Popocatépetl volcano monitoring network detected 268 exhalations, 90 minutes of tremors, and 3 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. Popocatepetl volcano last eruption caused light ashfall in the State of Mexico; Ozumba; Puebla; San Nicolás de los Ranchos; Chiautzingo; San Matías Tlalpaneca, and Teotlalzingo. Flash floods in Angola kill 41 people

January 9, 2020: According to the civil protection authorities of Angola, as of 10 January, flash floods have claimed lives of 41 people and affected around 11,190 people. Shishaldin volcano eruption in Alaska prompts RED ALERT

January 8, 2020:  The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has upgraded the aviation color code to red and alert level to warning after eruption occurred at Shishaldin volcano on January 7, 2020. The Alaska Volcano Observatory reported that ash was blowing up to 27,000 feet in the air in the volcanic eruption that started around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.  According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, volcanic lighting was detected in the cloud and volcanic infrasound was detected at regional stations. The National Weather Service has issued an aviation advisory for the area. Shishaldin volcano, located near the center of Unimak Island in the eastern Aleutian Islands, is a spectacular symmetric cone with a base diameter of approximately 16 km (10 mi). Most eruptions are relatively small, although the April-May 1999 event generated an ash column that reached 45,000 ft above sea level, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Alaska Volcano Observatory mentioned in its website. January 8, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 has been recorded in Iran near the Bushehr nuclear plant today. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck 10 km southeast of Borazjan and 45 km far from Bushehr. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. Landslide: Trimingham cliff fall in Norfolk causes Caravan evacuation

December 6, 2020: A person staying at one of the caravans at the Trimingham House Caravan Park has been evacuated after a huge section of cliff fell onto the north Norfolk beach. According to the BBC , three seaside caravans are teetering on the brink of a cliff after a landslide the size of two football pitches. Members of the public have been warned to avoid Vale Road in Trimingham, near Cromer. Two weeks ago also, part of a cliff was collapsed in north Norfolk at the same site. 2019–20 worst bushfires in Australia kill 25 people

January 5, 2020: The worst bushfires in Australia have claimed lives of 25 people, burned an estimated 6.3 million hectares and destroyed over 2,500 buildings as of January 5, 2020. Eighteen people died in New South Wales, four in South Australia, two in Victoria and one in Australian Capital Territory. The New South Wales Government has already declared a state of emergency in New South Wales. Similarly, a catastrophic fire danger was declared in the Greater Sydney region on 12 November 2019. Since 1851, around 800 people have died due to the bushfires in Australia.

Israel: Fooding in Tel Aviv kills 2

January 4, 2020: Two people have been killed after flooding in the basement level of a residential building in the south of Tel Aviv, Israel. Around 3 inches of rain fell in Tel Aviv over the course of a two-hour period. According to the Israel's emergency agency, rescue crews had to use scuba gear to reach the elevator in a basement and pulled out but they died shortly after arriving at a hospital.
