Bolivia Flood Emergency: 30 killed, 21,000 families displaced

Bolivia government has declared national emergency after floods and landslides claimed lives of 30 people and displaced 21,000 families over the past few weeks. Fatalities are from La Paz, Beni, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca,Tarija and Potosì areas of Bolivia. Floods and landslides in Bolivia have affected more than 80 municipalities. Landslide in Caranavi area , about 180 kilometers from La Paz in Bolivia claimed lives of 16 people in September 2013. Below is a raw you tube video of Bolivia flood by Associated Press. Landslide in Jombang, Indonesia buries 14

Landslide in Jombang, Indonesia has claimed lives of  at least 7 people, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said as quoted by The Jakarta Post. Landslide caused by torrential rainfall has buried at least 14 people. Indonesian Military (TNI) and search and rescue (SAR) personnel are involved in rescue operation. Flash floods in Kudus district of Central Java have swept away seven houses and seriously damaged four others. Mudslides in Catamarca, Argentina claim 12 lives, 25 missing

Update 2014/01/27 Death toll from mudslide in Catamarca has risen to 12 with 25 still missing, The Catamarca Emergency Committee said. Emergency declared after severe earthquake in Greek island of Cephalonia

Emergency has been declared following the severe earthquake in Cephalonia island of Greece. At least seven people are reported to be injured by the earthquake. Schools across Cephalonia (Kefalonia) will be closed Monday to inspect the earthquake damage. Tremors were even felt in parts of Albania (Tirana) and Italy. Lightning strike in Burundi kills 7 students, injures 51

Lightning strike in Burundi has claimed lives of at least seven students and injured 51 others, international medias reported. Lightning bolt hit the classroom where the high school students were sheltering from a severe storm. Heavy rains have destroyed more than 500 houses in the area. Tsunami predictions 2014 for Russia

Tsunami is predicted to hit Russia’s Far East this year, Ria Novosti reported quoting the Emergencies Ministry. Major earthquake is expected to hit off the southwestern coast of Sakhalin Island creating the Tsunami. Russia's Tsunami predictions 2014 have been done north of the epicenter of a 2007 quake, the emergency ministry added. However, the exact time is unknown and it's effect isn't clear. Indian Kashmir avalanche kills Swiss skier, injures 2

An avalanche in Indian-controlled Kashmir region has claimed life of a Swiss skier and injured two others. Avalanche occurred in Gulmarg region located 52 kilometers northwest of Srinagar. An avalanche warning was issued after heavy snowfall on Wednesday. Avalanches are common in Kashmir region. Avalanche in Kashmir killed an army jawan some days ago. China forest fires kill 5 and injure 7, emergency response issued

Forest fires in China have claimed lives of at least five people and injured seven others, Xinhua reported. Around 46 forest fires incidents have been recorded in Hunan, Jiangxi and Guangdong Provinces of China. The State Headquarters for Forest Fire Control has issued a fourth-level emergency response plan. Light earthquake in Saudi Arabia, 52 km NNE of Jizan

M 4.4 light earthquake shakes Saudi Arabia today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 23 km NE of Sabya. It was 7.4 miles deep. Tremor has been reported by the people of Sabya, Jizan, Samitah, Abha and surrounding areas. The Gulf of Aqaba and Jizan comparatively fall under high earthquake risk area. Epicenter of current earthquake in Saudi Arabia lies 52 km NNE of Jizan. But overall the risk of damage from earthquakes in Saudi Arabia is quite low in most of the areas, Saudi Geological Survey said in its website. New York Snow Storm 2014 prompts emergency, 1 killed

A state of emergency has been declared following a major snow storm in the New York City metropolitan area. At least one person is reported to be killed in Maryland. According to the international news agencies, around 25 cm snow has been recorded in New York. The State Emergency Operations Center has also been activated. Ecology Disaster: Jakarta flooding claims 11 lives

Indonesian Environment Ministry has declared an ecology disaster after flooding in Jakarta, Indonesia claimed lives of at least 11 people. According to the Indonesian Environment Ministry, natural calamities have occurred  by massive ecology destruction in upstream area of Ciliwung river that runs through the city. Flooding in Jakarta in 2014 has affected 97 sub-districts displacing more than 63,000 people, The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported. Landslides and flooding in Sulwesi, Indonesia claimed lives of at least 16 people and displaced around 4,000 people, local disaster management agency reported some days ago. Flooding in Jakarta in January 2013 had claimed lives of 47 people. The combination of the increased loss of vegetation in the upper catchments of rivers and the lack of adequate flood prevention causes frequent flooding disaster in Jakarta. Landslide in Zhejiang Province of Eastern China has claimed lives of at least four people Monday afternoon, Xinhua reported. Landslide disaster occurred near a road construction site in Kaihua county in Quzhou city of China. One person is currently having treatment at the hospital. Recent floods in France kill 2, leave 1 missing

Recent floods in France have claimed lives of at least two people and left third man missing. Fatalities include a 73-year-old man who died in basement flooding and another person was swept away in his car in French Riviera. More than 150 people have been evacuated from flood stricken areas, local medias reported. French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault will travel to the flood affected area early Monday. Earthquake Hungary 2014: Magnitude 4.4 shakes Budapest

M 4.4 moderate earthquake shakes Hungary today, the Seismological Observatory of Hungary (Kövesligethy Radó Szeizmológiai Obszervatórium) reported. The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 3.4 earthquake after 14 minutes. Tremor was even felt in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 7 km ESE of Balassagyarmat and 66 km NNE of Budapest. It was 6.2 miles deep. Minor damages have been reported near the epicenter. Manado, Indonesia Flooding: Calamities in Sulawesi claim 16 lives

Landslides and flooding in Sulwesi, Indonesia have claimed lives of at least 16 people and displaced around 4,000 people, local disaster management agency said. Fatalities occurred due to floodwaters in Manado and by landslides in Tomohon city and Minahasa district of Indonesia. Around 2,761 people affected by floods in Jakarta have been taking refuge in 20 temporary shelters, the Jakarta Post reported quoting the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD). The Police, Armies, National Search and Rescue Agency and the Indonesian Red Cross are engaged in rescue operations. Flooding in Sao Paolo, Brazil claims 10 lives, state of calamity declared

A state of calamity has been declared after floods and mudslides claimed lives of at least ten people and left 10 others missing in southeast Brazil. According to the Brazil’s Civil Defence Department, five hours of heavy rainfall through the night, Sunday to Monday in Itaoca, Sao Paolo displaced more than 300 people. Brunei Meteorological Department has issued flood warning placing the orange code for severe weather, Xinhua reported. Flood warning in Brunei was issued at 11.55 pm on January 13. Flooding in Mindanao, Philippines claims 12 lives

Flooding in Mindanao region of Philippines has claimed lives of at least 12 people and displaced hundreds of families. Mozambique lightning strikes: 4 killed, 8 injured in Zambezia

Lightning strikes in Mozambique have claimed lives of four people and injured eight others during storms, All Africa reported quoting the Beira daily paper, "Diario de Mocambique". The lightning strikes killed people in the Chinde, Gile and Milange districts in Zambezia province of Mozambique. Shiveluch volcano eruption spews ash to 6.2 km

Shiveluch volcano eruption in Russia has spewed ash to a height of 6.2 km above sea level, The Voice of Russia reported quoting the Emergency Situations' Ministry department for Kamchatka territory. Shiveluch has been assigned the orange aviation-related colour code, the second-highest danger for airliners by the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT). No ash falls have been registered in nearby towns and Ust-Kamchatka district. The Kamchatkan volcano Shiveluch has been periodically spewing ash from three to ten kilometers from May 2009. Shiveluch is the northernmost hyperactive volcano in Kamchatka Krai, Russia. Klyuchi is the nearest settlement from the volcano located 50 km far. Tonga Cyclone Ian kills 1, emergency declared

Severe tropical cyclone Ian has claimed life of at least one person and caused huge damage in Ha'apai islands of Tonga. Cyclone Ian claimed life of a person on Lifuka island in the central Ha'apai of Tonga, The Australian reported quoting Tonga emergency officer. Several houses are flattened and power lines are downed in the area. The extent of the damage is not clear, but Ha'ano and Foa Islands are believed to be badly affected. A state of emergency has been declared in Vava'u and Ha'apai. The Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Center had issued a hurricane warning for the Vava'u group in Tonga . An avalanche in Kashmir, India has claimed life of an army jawan and left other missing. The avalanche hit the Army post in Sonapendi Gali of Machil sector in Kupwara district Thursday evening, Times of India reported. Lightning strike in Argentina kills 3, injures 22

Lightning strike in Argentina has claimed lives of at least three people and injured 22 others.   Lightning bolt hit Villa Gesell, Argentina on Thursday afternoon and injured 16 adults and six children, Telam state news agency reported. Many of the injured people are having treatment in hospital for burns. Villa Gesell is a seaside village in Villa Gesell Partido on the Atlantic coast located around 400 kilometers from Buenos Aires. Cuba Earthquake Today: 5.1 Quake Felt in Havana and Key West, Florida

M 5.1 moderate earthquake shakes Cuba today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 24 km NNW of Corralillo and 174 km E of Havana. It was 6.2 miles deep. The quake was well felt in capital Havana (La Habana) where two buildings were temporarily evacuated. It was felt as far away as Key West, Florida. No immediate damage or injuries have been reported from earthquake in Cuba today. According to the U.S.G.S, Only six documented events ranging from M 3.0-5.6 have occurred over the past 75 years within 200 km of the epicenter. Tropical Cyclone Ian prompts hurricane warning in Vava'u, Tonga

A hurricane warning has been issued for the Vava'u group in Tonga following tropical cyclone Ian, the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Center said in its latest update. Tropical cyclone Ian updates issued at 4:30 Am Friday morning (January 10, 2014) has kept Ha'apai and Niuafo'ou under gale warning. A storm alert remains in force for the Ha'apai group. Similarly, a tropical cyclone alert remains in force for Tongatapu and 'Eua. Severe tropical cyclone Ian, a category four storm was located 170 km South-SouthWest of Niuafo'Ou and 295 km NorthWest of Vava'U at 1:00 AM Friday morning. Following current track, Tropical cyclone Ian is predicted to bring destructive storm force winds to the Vava'U group in the next 12-18 hours followed by a very destructive hurricane force winds in the next 18-24 hours. The government of Tonga held an emergency meeting and is currently monitoring the cyclone. The Emergency Operation Centres have been activated.

M 3.5 light earthquake shakes Oklahoma today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 9 km NW of Prague. It was 3.1 miles deep. Light to weak shaking have been felt by the people of Shawnee, Prague and Tulsa. Nepal cold wave claims 2 lives

Cold wave has claimed lives of two persons in Mahottari and Jhapa districts on Wednesday. In Mahottari, 52-year-old  Sujandevi Chaudhary of Banauli VDC died by severe cold, national medias reported. Similarly, cold wave in Arjundhara -9 of Jhapa district claimed life of a 52-year-old Parshuram Darji.  Dozens of flights from various western Terai districts have been cancelled including the flights from Bhairahawa, Dhangadhi, and Nepalgunj. Several people in Terai regions are suffering from cough, fever and respiratory problems. East Vail avalanche report: 1 killed, 3 injured

An avalanche in the backcountry near Vail has claimed life of a person, Colorado Avalanche Information Center confirmed. Fatality is said to be a grandson of Peter Seibert Sr., a co-founder of the Vail ski resort. Others three trapped in the snow have been rescued without major injuries. The avalanche occurred at around 11:30 am in East Vail Chutes, an area between Vail Mountain and Vail Pass. According to The Denver Post, the East Vail avalanches have deadly history. Storm in Tanzania hits dhow, 4 killed

At least four people have died after storm hit a dhow on the Indian Ocean in Rufiji District in Tanzania, The Citizen reported. Fatalities include an infant and a teacher at Kiechuru Primary School in Rufiji. Storm hit a ferry named MV Nyaulele owned by Unyaulele Cooperative Society at Dimani area. Storms batter Spain, two children seriously injured, one missing

Strong storms and high tides swept Spain on Saturday, seriously injuring two children and leaving at least one person missing. Winds of at least 110 km/hr hit the country leaving two children injured in Murcia, Think Spain reported. They are having treatment at the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia city.   A fisherman has been missing from the coast of Balieiros beach in Ribeira. Coastguard rescuers are searching the missing person. More than 500 lightning strikes have been recorded in Galicia.  Around 96 calls were received by Emergency services in just two hours in Madrid. Moderate earthquake in Cali, Colombia today

M 5.3 moderate earthquake shakes Colombia today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 40 km (25mi) W of El Dovio. It was 38.1 miles deep. People of Andes, Armenia, Bogotá, Buenavista, Cali, Envigado, Itagüí, Pereira and Vista Hermosa have reported light to weak shaking. No damage or injuries have been reported from earthquake in Cali, Colombia today. Tropical Cyclone Bejisa has claimed life of a person and injured at least 15 others in French Indian Ocean island of Reunion. The eye of Cyclone Bejisa passed within 15 kilometers of the western side of Reunion Island, Euro News reported. The Roland Garros airport located in Sainte-Marie on Réunion was also closed. According to the Mauritius Meteorological Services, Cyclone Bejisa was located about 275 km to the west south west of Le Morne in the last cyclone bulletin issued at 20H00 on Thursday 2, January 2014. Flooding in Andean Cusco region of Peru leaves 16,000 homeless, emergency declared

Flooding in Andean Cusco region of Southern Peru has made 16,000 people homeless, Xinhua reported. The Quillabamba River burst its banks following torrential downpours and caused flooding in the area. A state of emergency has been declared in the area and rescue teams have been send to help the people in disaster area.
