Earthquake felt in Port Hedland, Australia today

February 27, 2019: Geoscience Australia has recorded a magnitude 2.6 weak earthquake in Port Hedland, WA today. The earthquake occurred at 10km depth at 9:47 pm.  Weak shaking of MMI II-III was felt across Tecoma way, Pretty Pool, Wedgefield, Port Haven and South Hedland. No damage or injuries has been reported.

Snowfall in Kathmandu after 12 yrs - Observed in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur

February 28, 2019: Kathmandu valley residents were welcomed with snowfall on Thursday morning.  The snowfall lasted for around 15 minutes at 6:45 am across the city areas of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur areas. However, the snowfall lasted for hours in the surrounding hills of Kathmandu valley. Tropical Cyclone Pola upgraded to category 3, bringing severe weather to Fiji and Tonga

February 27, 2019: Tropical Cyclone Pola has been upgraded to a severe category 3 system as it continues to move south southwest between Tonga and Fiji. Tropical Cyclone Pola is currently a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone, based on the Fiji tropical scale, with winds equal to a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. Recommended Post:  Natural Disaster Insurance Covered $90B Losses in 2018 According to the Tonga Met Service, a storm force wind warning remains in force for Tele-Ki-Tonga and Tele-Ki-Tokelau and a gale warning remains in force for Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua. Tropical Cyclone Pola is currently located 275km west northwest of Nuku'alofa, moving south-southwest at 20km/hr.

Lightning strike kills woman in Birgunj, Nepal

February 27, 2019: Lightning strike in Birgunj has claimed life of a woman and injured other woman. The fatality has been identified as 30 years old, Ruafaja Khatun of Birgunj Metropolitan City. Another injured woman is having treatment at Birgunj Health Care Hospital.

Lightning in Pir Mahal, Pakistan kills 3

February 26, 2019: Lightning in Pir Mahal, capital city of Pir Mahal Tehsil in the Punjab province of Pakistan has claimed lives of three bothers. According to Dunya News , a resident of Lower Colony area of Pir Mahal, were working in the fields when lightning struck them as a result they died on the spot. 

Two light earthquakes recorded in Nepal in last 24 hrs

Earthquake epicenter map (NSC) February 26, 2019: Nepal Seismological Center has recorded two light earthquakes in last 24 hours in Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha district of Nepal. Magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded in Dolakha district at 04:15 pm Tuesday. The epicenter was located near Bhimeshwor Municipality. Five minutes later, magnitude 4.1 earthquake was recorded in Sindhupalchowk district. The epicenter was located near Marming. No damage or injuries have been recorded from these earthquakes. Two weeks earlier, Nepal Seismological Center had recorded magnitude 4.0 earthquake with epicenter in Kirtipur . 

Emergency declaration as flooding in Tennessee kills 3

February 25, 2019: A state of emergency has been declared in Tennessee as severe flooding claimed lives of at least three people this month. One man drowned in Knoxville after becoming trapped in his car when he drove onto an inundated roadway. A man died in Hawkins County, northeastern Tennessee, when his pickup truck slid down an embankment during a mudslide. Third fatality occurred in the central part of the state, just west of Nashville. Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) declared a state of emergency Saturday due to rising flood waters.

Magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Peru-Ecuador border region

February 22, 2019: An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 has been recorded in Peru-Ecuador border region, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The earthquake occurred at a greater depth of 287 km. It is the reason the earthquake was felt in wider region of Ecuador. It was followed by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred less than 25 minutes later in western Ecuador, near the city of Guayaquil. According to the National Risk and Emergency Management Service of Ecuador, six people were injured in Gualaquiza, Macas and Cuenca.

Natural Disaster Insurance Covered $90B Losses in 2018

February 20, 2019: The economic costs of 2018 natural disaster events came to US$225 billion with insurance covering US$90 billion of the overall total, according to “Weather, Climate & Catastrophe Insight – 2018 Annual Report" published by Aon. The insurance and reinsurance broker said that this makes 2018 the fourth costliest year on record of insured losses. Economic losses from natural catastrophes and severe weather events around the globe cost the economies of the world $225 billion, meaning that the protection gap, or portion of economic losses not covered by insurance, was 60% which Aon says is the lowest level since 2005. Tremor felt in Chiang Mai, Thailand: TMD records M4.5 earthquake

Earthquake'e epicenter map (EMSC) February 20, 2019: An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 has been recorded in Thailand today at 04:05 pm THA. The Seismological Bureau Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) measured the earthquake at the depth of 10km. The epicenter was located 29 km W of Phayao, Thailand. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), light to weak tremor with MMI II-III was felt in Phayao Phayao, Sansai Chiang Mai, Maerim Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Lampang. No preliminary damage or injuries have been recorded.

Wutip to become a typhoon, may threaten Guam this weekend

February 20, 2018: The tropical depression has formed near the Federated States of Micronesia on Tuesday. The system developed to tropical storm strength early on Wednesday, earning the name Wutip, Accuweather reported. This tropical system is expected to become a typhoon by Thursday bringing unsettled weather to Chuuk State. As of 12:23 p.m., the storm was located southwest of Pohnpei and was moving west at 15 mph, according to the National Weather Service Guam office. As per the current track of the storm, developed Typhoon Wutip will causes a risk for flooding rainfall and damaging winds across Guam and parts of the Northern Mariana Islands. February 19, 2019: The National Weather Service in Charleston was flooded with an earthquake felt reports in Charleston South Carolina area at shortly after 4 p.m.  Earthquake felt reports were mainly reported from Charleston, North Charleston, Summerville, Awendaw, Goose Creek, Johns Island, Kiawah, James Island, Daniel Island and Moncks Corner areas. So was that really an earthquake? Q: Was that an earthquake that I felt around 4 p.m.today in Charleston, South Carolina area? A: No, it was not an earthquake. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division had not received any reports of seismic activity at that time. Catastrophic flash flood warning for Parramatta, Australia

February 19, 2019: A flash flood warning has been issued saying that Parramatta's CBD could be overwhelmed by a flash flood in as little as nine minutes, giving residents little time to evacuate. "The risk is the inability to get people out. Our warning times can be short,"  The Sydney Morning Herald reported citing George Jeoffreys, senior manager for risk reduction and avoidance at the NSW State Emergency Service . Magnitude 4.5 earthquake in Hakuba today: JMA

February 19, 2019: An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 has been recorded in Hakuba, just outside the city of Nagano today, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported. The earthquake occurred at 21:04 JST with epicenter located 10km below the surface. Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has measured seismic intensity of 3 in Nagano-ken Hokubu region. According to JMA, seismic activity of 3 would have been felt in Nagano-shi, Omachi-shi, Matsukawa-mura and Ogawa-mura area. This earthquake poses no tsunami risk. Magnitude 4.6 earthquake felt in Anchorage, Alaska today

February 18, 2019: An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 has been recorded in Anchorage, Alaska today at 08:02 local time. According to the United States Geological center (USGS), the earthquake's epicenter was located just 20 km N of Anchorage. The tremor was widely felt in Anchorage, Houston, Palmer, Eagle River,  No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported from Anchorage earthquake. Lightning in Panchthar, Nepal kills 1

February 17, 2019: Lightning in Panchthar has claimed life of a person and injured 10 others. Lightning killed Bhagendra Tamang,17, a resident of Pauwasartapka in Phalgunandana rural municipality-3. M3.8 earthquake felt in Yountville and Napa today

February 17, 2019: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 3.8-magnitude earthquake in an area northwest of the city of Napa early Sunday morning. The epicenter was located 4 miles south-southwest of Yountville, west of Dry Creek Road.

Vanuatu: Tropical Cyclone Oma strengthens to a category 3

Traditionally-built homes in Vanuatu have been receiving the brunt of Cyclone Oma (IFRC Asia Pacific/Twitter) February 17, 2019: The Fiji Meteorological Service has upgraded Tropical Cyclone Oma to a category 3. According to the Radio New Zealand, the tropical cyclone Oma lashed the northern islands of the Vanuatu over the past 24 hours, reportedly bringing down trees and houses in the area. The Vanuatu Red Cross has reported that the houses and trees have been brought down by Cyclone Oma in the north of the country. February 16, 2019: Nepal Seismological Center has recorded magnitude 4.0  earthquake in Nepal today at 08:35pm local time. Did you feel it? Please share your experience in the comment section below. Update 09:05 pm As updated earlier, the epicenter is located in Southern part of the Kathmandu valley. Kirtipur is one of the ancient city of Kathmandu valley. The Kirtipur area was also devastated by 2015 Nepal earthquake. The current tremor with epicenter at Kirtipur is an aftershock of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake . The epicenter is located south of Mahadev temple and Newa Lahana in Kirtipur. Light to weak tremor was felt in Nagarjun, Tokha, Chandragiri, Kirtipur, Budhanilakantha, Gokarneshwor and parts of Bhaktapur areas. The tremor was relatively felt stronger in Kathmandu and Patan district than the Bhaktapur area. No injuries or damage reports have been received. Two days ago, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 was recorded in Taplejung, the eastern part of Nepal.

Landslide in Bogor, Indonesia kills 4

February 16, 2019: Landslide in Kampung Ciapus, Ciomas district in Bogor regency, West Java of Indonesia has claimed lives of at least four people and injured four others. The landslide was triggered by heavy rain which buried house located below the hill.

Fash floods in Tenerife, Spain kill 5

February 16, 2019: Flash floods caused by an intense storm claimed lives of five people on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife . According to Pilar Merino Tromboso, the Interior Ministry representative in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 224 liters (59 gallons) per square meter of rain fell on the city in four hours Sunday.
