Flooding in Telangana kills 50 people — Heavy October rain in Hyderabad after 129 years

October 16, 2020: At least 50 people have been killed in Telangana state of India, many of them in the capital Hyderabad. According to the India Meteorological Office (IMD), Ghatkesar received record rainfall of 322 mm from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Hyderabad has last seen such heavy October rains after 129 years. Hyderabad has set a record of wettest year in 2020 with 404% more than normal annual rainfall. 

Major flooding in Madhya Pradesh, India kills 24

September 3, 2020: At least 24 people have been killed and 11,000 people have been displaced after heavy rains causing flooding in Madhya Pradesh, India. Heavy rainfall caused the Narmada River at Hoshangabad to rise around 2 m above the danger mark. According to the India’s Disaster Management Division, recent flooding has affected 33.000 people across 1,906 villages and 28 districts of the state. A total of 11 197 homes have also been damaged.

Heavy rainfall in Mumbai collapses buildings, 12 killed

July 19: Two building collapsed due to heavy rainfall n Mumbai has claimed lives of at least 12 people. In the Fort area, at least ten people died after a six-story residential building collapsed amid heavy rainfall. Another three-story tenement collapsed in Mumbai's western suburb of Malad killed two people.

India: Flash floods in Delhi kill four

July 21, 2020: Flash floods in Delhi have claimed lives of at least four people. Safdarjung recorded 74.8 mm rainfall on Sunday, the highest 24-hour July downpour since 2015. Many parts of the capital city registered almost 100 mm (3.9 inches) of rainfall.

Rajkot earthquake today: Epicenter 9 km from Rajkot near Tramba

July 16, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 has been felt in Rajkot, Gujarat today at 07:40 a.m. According to the Indian Seismological Center, the epicentre of the earthquake was located about 19 km from Rajkot near Tramba. The earthquake in Gujarat today occurred at a depth of more than 10 kilometres. The earthquake was felt as far away as Jasdan.  Last month, magnitude 5.3 moderate earthquake rattled Rajkot which epicenter was located in Kutch district of Gujarat, India . No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported from earthquake in Rajkot today.

Magnitude 4.5 earthquake recorded near Kargil in Ladakh

July 2, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 has been recorded near Kargil in Ladakh on Thursday afternoon, India's National Center for Seismology confirmed. The earthquake occurred at 01:11 pm local time at a depth of 90 km. The earthquake's epicenter was located around 119 km north-northwest (NNW) of Kargil, Ladakh. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

INDIA: Violent tornado in Odisha injures 12 people

June 16, 2020: A tornado in the Rajnagar block of Odisha ’s Kendrapara district has injured 12 people and damaged 70 houses. The storm has affected several villages including Rangani, Patparia, Baghamari, Garata, Ahirajpur, Keruapala, Sailendrasarai, Hatiaganda, Pravati, Kantiakhai and Khamarasahi.

Dust storm, heavy rain cause damage in Delhi and Noida

June 10, 2020: Dust storm and heavy rainfall lashed Delhi and Greater Noida today, uprooting trees, damaging vehicles and bringing down billboards. Traffic snarls were reported on the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Highway as well as on the Kalindi Kunj Road. Several tress were uprooted and cars were damaged in Noida's Sector 41. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) , thunderstorm with light rain accompanied with gusty winds of the speed of 40-50 kmph occurred over Delhi-NCR.  The Gautam Buddh Nagar traffic police tweeted that the traffic was disrupted due to felling of trees on the Kalindi Kunj road going from Delhi to Noida. The change in the weather has been caused by a cyclonic circulation over north Rajasthan and through running from North Pakistan to low-pressure area over the Bay of  Bengal .

New Cyclone 'Gati' to be formed in Bay of Bengal

June 10, 2020: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a new cyclone 'Gati' to develop over the Bay of Bengal this week.  A low pressure area is forecast to form somewhere near the coast of Myanmar. However, it is important to note that not all low pressure areas intensity into cyclones. If the weather disturbance reaches a certain level, it would be named as Cyclone Gati.  India has already experienced two cyclones this year. The Cyclone Amphan hit west Bengal in late May and another cyclone Nisarga hit the coast of Maharastra near Mumbai in early June.

Loud sound in Bangalore: Neither earthquake nor sonic boom!

May 20, 2020: A loud sound heard in Bangalore on Wednesday afternoon left the city residents panicked. The sound was heard from as far as the Bengaluru airport in Devanahalli to the IT hub of Electronic City. Several residents posted on Twitter, wondering if an earthquake had hit the Karnataka capital. However, the Karnataka's natural disaster monitoring centre confirmed that it was not because of an earthquake. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre tweeted that they have checked  sensors and there is no earthquake activity recorded today. Later people shared it to be sonic boom caused due to a fighter jet. But, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) claimed it to be false. When will Amphan Cyclone hit in India?

Q: When will Amphan Cyclone hit in India? A: Amphan Cyclone is expected to make a landfall in India this Wednesday on May 20, 2020. According to the India Meteorological Department, Amphan is likely to cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) on May 20, 2020. Coastal districts of West Bengal are expected to have rainfall until May 20. The states of West Bengal and Odisha are on high alert. Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan is currently active over the Bay of Bengal threatening Odisha and West Bengal in India as well as Bangladesh. This is the first tropical cyclone of the 2020 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.

Earthquake in Kangra today: 4.0 magnitude earthquake shakes Himachal Pradesh

April 28, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 hit Chamba region today at around 12:17 pm in Himachal Pradesh of India with tremor felt in the neighbouring districts including Kangra. People from Dharamshala, the district headquarters of Kangra district also reported about the tremor felt due the earthquake. No preliminary damage or injuries have been recorded due to the earthquake in Kangra today. A destructive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 in Kangra valley in 1905 killed more than 20,000 people.

Siliguri earthquake 2020: M4.0 earthquake rattles North Bengal and Sikkim

April 26, 2020: Magnitude 4.0 light earthquake has been recorded in Sikkim at 10:59 am with most of the felt reports received from Siliguri, the Indian State of west Bengal. The epicenter was located 26 km NE of Odlabar and 49 km far from Siliguri, India. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. The epicenter was located near India-Bangladesh border region. The earthquake felt reports were received from Nagrakata, Siliguri and Kalchini areas.  No preliminary or injuries have been reported from earthquake in Siiguri today.

Sardhana Earthquake: M 3.7 earthquake felt in Delhi-NCR Region

April 12, 2020: Magnitude 3.7 light earthquake has been recorded in Uttar Pradesh, India today at 5:45 pm local time, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. According to the USGS, the quake's epicenter was located around 5 km SE of Sardhana and 67 km SSW of Delhi. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. USGS received earthquake felt reports from Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurgaon. CM Arvind Kejriwal prayed for everyone's safety via twitter. No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported. April 7, 2020: Recently a WhatsApp message has been viral in India claiming the NASA alert on mega earthquake predicted to hit National Capital Delhi between 7th April to 15th April, 2020. However, the video predicting earthquake to hit Delhi between April 7 to April 15, 2020 is totally FAKE! The video which is actually dated back to 2018 claims that NASA predicted an earthquake of magnitude 9.1 in New Delhi. Similar WhatsApp message was viral in 2018 as well claiming NASA report on predicting a magnitude 9.1 earthquake in Delhi between 7th April to 15th April, 2020. The message in 2018 also claimed that the earthquake's epicenter would be Gurugram. The earthquake would cause damage in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, J&K to Tamilnadu, Rajasthan to Bihar. Tezpur earthquake today measures 4.7 in magnitude

April 5, 2020: A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.7 has been felt in Tezpur, India today at 23:20 pm local time. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter was located 17 km S of Tezpur. The earthquake occurred at 49 km depth. The earthquake was felt by the people of Tezpur, Nagaon, Rangapara,Itanagar, Gauhati and as far as Shillong, Meghalaya. No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported from the earthquake in Tezpur today.

M3.2 earthquake in Coorg today — Epicenter near Arkalgud-K R Nagar

April 3, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 has been recorded in Coorg, Karnataka at 05:20 pm local time. The earthquake tremor which lasted for about three seconds had its epicenter near Arkalgud-K R Nagar, Karnataka, India . According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, the tremor was felt in Mysuru, Mandya and Hassan district. The people rushed out of their houses for safety in various areas of Kodagu district.. No major damage or injuries is expected from the earthquake due to its mild intensity.
