India: Hyderabad Flood Devastates Nallakunta Area Due to Incomplete Nala Works

March 29, 2023: The heavy rainfall caused a lot of destruction in Hyderabad, with Nallakunta being the most affected area. The incomplete construction of the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) resulted in the overflowing of the nala, which flooded the streets and caused damage to the area. The rainfall caused the death of a nine-year-old girl who fell into the nala in Kalasiguda, where the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) was laying a CC road. Videos and pictures of the havoc caused by the rain went viral on social media, and the GHMC received over 500 complaints related to fallen trees and flooding. Many two-wheelers were washed away in the rainwater, and the incomplete works of SNDP resulted in waterlogging in Nallakunta. Jammu and Kashmir Hit by Magnitude 4.1 Earthquake, Emergency Operation Centers to be Set up in All Districts

March 30, 2023: An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale hit the Jammu and Kashmir region on Sunday morning, as confirmed by the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake occurred at 5:15 am and had a depth of 5 km. The latitude and longitude of the epicenter were reported to be 35.06 and 74.49, respectively. In a tweet, the National Center for Seismology stated, "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.1, Occurred on 30-04-2023, 05:15:34 IST, Lat: 35.06 & Long: 74.49, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Jammu and Kashmir, India." As a high seismic zone and vulnerable to flood damage, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced plans to construct state-of-the-art Emergency Operation Centers (EOC) in all 20 districts to minimize the impact of natural disasters.  The earthquake caused panic among the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, who rushed out of their homes in fear. Deadly Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India

On March 21, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 hit Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan, at an intermediate depth of about 187 km (116 mi). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 40 km (25 mi) south-southeast of Jurm. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of Mww 6.5, while the Pakistan Meteorological Department stated it was 6.8. However, the earthquake was initially reported as Mw 7.7, which was later found to be inaccurate. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the earthquake shook an area of about 1,000 km (620 mi), affecting around 285 million people in Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Afghanistan, with at least 10 deaths, 80 injuries, and over 665 houses destroyed across nine provinces. July 29, 2022: Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued high flood alert for  Chenab river today. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, high flood in river Chenab is expected at Marala Headworks in Sialkot district, Khanki headworks in Gujranwala district and Qadirabad headworks in Mandi Bahauddin district. Flooded Chenab river is flowing above danger mark at Akhnoor.

Landslide on Jammu-Srinagar highway today disrupts annual Amarnath Yatra

July 28, 2022: Landslides triggered by incessant rainfall have briefly disrupted the annual Amarnath Yatra after the closure of the 270-km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway. According to the officials at the traffic department, the incessant rainfall triggered landslides in Panthyal and Mehad stretches of Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Flash floods and landslides have been reported in Jammu, Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur and Reasi districts. All government and private schools in Jammu have been closed. According to traffic police advisory, people are advised not to travel on Jammu-Srinagar highway without confirmation.

INDIA: Flooding in Andhra Pradesh kills 34

 November 23, 2021: Massive flooding in Andhra Pradesh, India has claimed lives of 34 people and left 10 others missing. The low pressure areas in the Bay of Bengal and cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea triggered heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The flood water has also washed away part of Chennai-Kolkata National Highway 16. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala till November 26.

ADB approves $251 million for urban flood protection and management in India

September 24, 2021: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $251 million for urban flood protection and management in India. The loan has been issued for integrated flood management of the Chennai–Kosasthalaiyar river basin. The loan will be utilized to establish climate-resilient urban flood protection infrastructure. 

Flooding in Gujarat affects Jamnagar and Rajkot, three killed

September 14, 2021: Recent flooding in Gujarat has claimed lives of three people and left five others missing Two people died in Jamnagar and one in Rajkot. Around 1,300 have been asked to evacuate and move to the upper areas in Rajkot city Also around 4200 people have been evacuated from Jamnagar district. Schools and colleges have been closed due to the floodwater in Rajkot city and adjoining areas.

3.9 magnitude earthquake rattles Vijayapura and Kolhapur today

September 4, 2021: A light earthquake of magnitude 3.9 has been felt in Vijayapura (also called Bijapur) in Karnataka state of India today at 11:49 pm. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the earthquake occurred in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, bordered with Karnataka. The epicenter was located 19 km W of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, the National Center for Seismology confirmed. The earthquake occurred at 39 km depth. The tremor was felt in various cities of Maharashtra and Karnataka. People living in Vijayapura City, Basavana Bagewadi, Tikota, Indi and Sindagi areas ran out of their houses immediately after the tremor. No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported.

INDIA: Earthquake tremor in Gorakhpur today!

Update India's National Center for Seismology has not recorded any earthquake in Gorakhpur or in any region of Uttar Pradesh at that time.  Though people of Gorakhpur have reported of feeling tremor, the reason is still unknown. Main Post June 20, 2021: Hundreds of people shared of an earthquake tremor felt in Gorakhpur today at 02:26 am. We checked national as well as international seismological sites but couldn't get any information about the earthquake. We will update about this seismic event in Gorakhpur once it is verified.

Cyclone Yaas Update: Yaas to make landfall near Dhamra port of Odisha

INDIA: Chamoli glacial outburst flood kills 26, leaves 200 missing

February 8, 2021: A glacial outburst flood in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand region of India has claimed lives of 26 people and left around 200 people missing. The flooding occurred after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off early on 7th of February. The flood damaged the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army have been involved for the rescue operation. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has announced Rs 4 lakh financial assistance each for the families of those killed in the disaster.

Flooding in Telangana kills 50 people — Heavy October rain in Hyderabad after 129 years

October 16, 2020: At least 50 people have been killed in Telangana state of India, many of them in the capital Hyderabad. According to the India Meteorological Office (IMD), Ghatkesar received record rainfall of 322 mm from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Hyderabad has last seen such heavy October rains after 129 years. Hyderabad has set a record of wettest year in 2020 with 404% more than normal annual rainfall. 

Major flooding in Madhya Pradesh, India kills 24

September 3, 2020: At least 24 people have been killed and 11,000 people have been displaced after heavy rains causing flooding in Madhya Pradesh, India. Heavy rainfall caused the Narmada River at Hoshangabad to rise around 2 m above the danger mark. According to the India’s Disaster Management Division, recent flooding has affected 33.000 people across 1,906 villages and 28 districts of the state. A total of 11 197 homes have also been damaged.

Heavy rainfall in Mumbai collapses buildings, 12 killed

July 19: Two building collapsed due to heavy rainfall n Mumbai has claimed lives of at least 12 people. In the Fort area, at least ten people died after a six-story residential building collapsed amid heavy rainfall. Another three-story tenement collapsed in Mumbai's western suburb of Malad killed two people.

India: Flash floods in Delhi kill four

July 21, 2020: Flash floods in Delhi have claimed lives of at least four people. Safdarjung recorded 74.8 mm rainfall on Sunday, the highest 24-hour July downpour since 2015. Many parts of the capital city registered almost 100 mm (3.9 inches) of rainfall.

Rajkot earthquake today: Epicenter 9 km from Rajkot near Tramba

July 16, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 has been felt in Rajkot, Gujarat today at 07:40 a.m. According to the Indian Seismological Center, the epicentre of the earthquake was located about 19 km from Rajkot near Tramba. The earthquake in Gujarat today occurred at a depth of more than 10 kilometres. The earthquake was felt as far away as Jasdan.  Last month, magnitude 5.3 moderate earthquake rattled Rajkot which epicenter was located in Kutch district of Gujarat, India . No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported from earthquake in Rajkot today.
