Pacific Ocean tsunami warning system to be tested in coming week

Countries bordering the Pacific Ocean will test the tsunami warning system from 2 to 6 February. "More than 40 countries will take part in the exercise named PacWave15," UNESCO Press mentioned. It is designed to assess the effectiveness of the communication systems used for warnings for which the messages will be issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Hawaii and the Northwest Pacific Tsunami Advisory Centre in Japan to focal points in every country.

China coal mine flooding kills 7

A coal mine flooding in east China's Anhui Province has claimed lives of seven people. According to People's Daily Online, the disaster occurred at the Zhuxianzhuang coal mine in Yongqiao District, Suzhou City, at 6:55 p.m. Friday. Thirty four miners were working underground when flooding happened. Twenty-seven miners managed to escape while seven others were trapped, according to the Huaibei Mining (Group) Co. Ltd., the owner of the coal mine.

Oakham, Rutland earthquake today measured 3.8 in magnitude

M 3.8 light earthquake shakes Oakham, Rutland today, the British Geological Survey reported. According to the British Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located in Oakham town of Rutland county in the East Midlands of England. It was 4.9 miles deep.

Earthquake confirmed in Winchester, Hampshire

An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 has been recorded in Hampshire, the British Geological Survey confirmed. According to the British Geological Survey, the quake's epicentre was approximately 1 km northeast of the centre of Winchester. It was 1.9 miles deep.

'DALER' robot can rescue you during natural disasters

A Deployable Air-Land Exploration Robot (DALER) which can fly by spreading its wings wide and walk by turning its wings down to function as legs has been created. The designers hope their adaptive robotic ‘bat’ could be used to find victims in dangerous areas after a natural disaster by being remotely deployed to fly to an affected area, before walking through the rubble to search for victims.

"The landslide believed to be occurred sometime around December 31 last year in Northern India has sent enough debris into the Tsarap River, creating an obstruction about 2,000 feet (600 meters) long, and a brand new 300-acre lake", io9 has written.

Queyras avalanche kills six skiers

An avalanche in the Queyras mountain range in the French Alps has claimed lives of six skiers. The bodies of three victims were found at an altitude of 2,500 metres. Later, a team of 18 rescue workers, backed by a helicopter and sniffer dogs discovered the rest of the missing team of hikers, France24 has written.

Damage reported as tornado hits Florida

A tornado touched down in Sarasota County, Florida around 3:30 a.m. on  Saturday, The National Weather Service confirmed. "The tornado touched down in Myakka State Park and destroyed a camper. The camper was lifted from its original position and thrown several yard away. Luckily, no one was in the camper at the time and there were no injuries",WINK News has written.

Japan avalanches claim four including 2 Argentine nationals

A series of avalanches over the weekend in Nagano and Niigata prefectures of Japan have claimed lives of four people. An avalanche Sunday at Ryuoo Ski Park in Yamanouchi, Nagano Prefecture, killed two Argentine nationals. The 30-meter-wide, 200-meter-long avalanche started when the two Argentines skied off the prepared slope, The Japan Times has written quoting the Nagano Prefectural Police.

Tropical storm Chedza kills 14 in Madagascar

Tropical storm Chedza has claimed lives of at least 14 people in Madagascar, the National Office of Risk and Catastrophe Management said Monday. Tropical storm Chedza has further displaced more than 36,000 Madagascans. Most of the fatalities are as a result of landslides caused by heavy rain and building collapses as strong winds tore roofs from houses.

10 killed in Albay, Philippines landslide; 200 rescued

The landslide triggered by heavy rains brought on by Tropical Storm "Amang" has claimed lives of at least 10 people. However, rescue teams have  saved at least 200 residents trapped by a landslide in Sitio Inang Maharang in Barangay Nagotgot, Manito, Albay.  Two military helicopters from the Philippine Air Force Tactical Operations Group 5 based in Legazpi City were deployed to the area to assist in the search operation, Inquirer has written quoting the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (Apsemo).

Hunga Tonga volcano eruption creates large new island

A large new island has been formed at the eruption site between Hunga Ha’apai and Hunga Tonga, 65 km from Nuku’alofa, Tonga’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources said. The volcano has been erupting from two vents, one on the uninhabited island of Hunga Ha'apai and the other underwater about 100 metres offshore. The new island is more than one kilometre wide, two kilometres long and about 100 metres high.

Malawi flood kills 176; 153 missing: National tragedy

The death toll from floods in Malawi has risen to 176 and made 200,000 homeless, Vice President Saulos Chilima said Friday. "At least 153 people are missing", Chilima told a news conference. The flood statistics was out when Chilima visited over the worst affected Lower Shire districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa in the south. President Peter Mutharika has called the floods a "national tragedy that urgently needs both local and international response".

Flights canceled as rare snowstorm hits Saudi Arabia

Rare snowstorm in Saudi Arabia has grounded planes at Turaif Domestic Airport. "Snow storms have left a layer of white snow on top of the sand", BBC reported. The bulk of the snow hit a town near the northern city of Tabuk and forced the Bedouin shepherds and their camels to stay in their tents for protection and to keep warm.

Flash flooding in Malawi kills 48, displaces 23,000

Heavy flooding in Malawi has claimed lives of at least 48 people and displaced around 23,000 others. Flash floods wreaked havoc in 10 out of 23 districts in Malawi, Nyasa Times has written quoting the President Peter Mutharika. Flood impact assessment has been hampered as most of the flood disaster areas are inaccessible and Malawi Defence Force has been requested to undertake rescue operations using boats.

Landslide in Jigawa state of Malaysia has claimed lives of two brothers. Fatalities include a 17-year-old boy and his 15-year-old brother. Landslide hit Zaidawa Village in Garki Local Government Area, Jigawa State while those boys were digging sand in the area, Sun News Online reported.

Snowstorm in Syria kills 11 including a two-day-old girl

Snowstorm in Syria has claimed lives of at least 11 people this week. "Seven children, including twin baby girls, were among the dead on Sunday", Times of Oman has written quoting the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Recent fatalities include a two-day-old girl in the Firdous district of the northern city of Aleppo and three boys in Beit Sahem, south of Damascus, in the eastern town of Albu Kamal and in southern Syria's Daraa province.

Turkey avalanche kills 1, traps 4: Disaster Management Agency

An avalanche in Turkey’s northeastern Trabzon region has claimed life of a worker and trapped four others, the disaster management agency (AFAD) said. "The five workers were repairing a broken generator in a construction site for a tunnel when the avalanche struck", Reuters has written quoting the disaster management agency's spokesman Dogan Eskinat.

Rare snowstorm in Lebanon kills 3 Syrian refugees

Snowstorm in Lebanon has claimed lives of two Syrian man and a young boy, bringing misery to thousands of Syrian refugees. The bodies of the two Syrians refugees have been found in the Shebaa region of south Lebanon who were crossing the mountainous border between Syria and Lebanon,, Times of Oman has written quoting the local Red Cross agency. Port Alberni earthquake today measured 4.8

M 4.8 moderate earthquake shakes Vancouver Island, Canada Region today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 62 km W of Port Alberni, Canada. It was 7.7 miles deep. Port Alberni earthquake today has been felt in Campbell River, Courtenay, Cumberland, Nanaimo, Parksville, Ucluelet, Vancouver, Victoria and Walnut Grove. Port Alberni was hit by tsunamis in 1964 which washed away 55 homes and damaging 375 others. The tsunami was the result of magnitude 9.6 earthquake in Alaska which killed 139 people.
