Flash flooding in Malawi kills 48, displaces 23,000

Heavy flooding in Malawi has claimed lives of at least 48 people and displaced around 23,000 others. Flash floods wreaked havoc in 10 out of 23 districts in Malawi, Nyasa Times has written quoting the President Peter Mutharika.

Flood impact assessment has been hampered as most of the flood disaster areas are inaccessible and Malawi Defence Force has been requested to undertake rescue operations using boats.

According to Aljazeera, Mutharika has appealed to the international community for assistance for the impoverished country. "Government alone cannot afford to help so I appeal to the international community for urgent assistance," he said.

President Mutharika has also declared disaster zone for Nsanje, Chikwawa, Phalombe, Zomba, Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Mulanje, Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi, Ntcheu, Salima, Rumphi and Koranga districts of Malwai.
