Turkey avalanche kills 1, traps 4: Disaster Management Agency

An avalanche in Turkey’s northeastern Trabzon region has claimed life of a worker and trapped four others, the disaster management agency (AFAD) said.

"The five workers were repairing a broken generator in a construction site for a tunnel when the avalanche struck", Reuters has written quoting the disaster management agency's spokesman Dogan Eskinat.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, the avalanche hit a hydroelectric power plant in Çaykara district and the heavy snow also closed many roads in hundreds of villages in Turkey on January 10.

Roads to 357 villages have been closed because of heavy snow in eastern Anatolia. "Temperatures dropped below zero this week in Ankara, Istanbul, İzmir, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Manisa and a number of other Turkish provinces", Hurriyet Daily News has added.

The bad weather has however delayed the rescue efforts in the avalanche disaster site.
