Pacific hurricane Marie kills 1, produces largest swell in southern California

Hurricane Marie is the sixth-most intense Pacific hurricane on record which became the first Category 5 hurricane in the Northeast Pacific since Hurricane Cella in 2010. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded Marie to Category 5 hurricane on August 24.

Federal Emergency Management Agency: $84,740 granted to Stearns County for tornado safe room construction

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has granted $84,740 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to Stearns County, Minnesota for the construction of a safe room at the Rose Park manufactured home community, FEMA said in its news release on August 27, 2014.

Earthquake triggered landslide in Ecuador kills 2

A landslide triggered by earthquake in Ecuador has claimed lives of at least two people, Reuters reports quoting the National Risk Control Agency. Another eight people have been injured and three others have been trapped in the landslides at quarries on the outskirts of Quito, Inquirer reports mentioning the country’s risk management agency.

Sankhuwasabha landslide kills 10

Update 2014/08/09 Death toll from Sankhuwasabha landslide has reached 10. Three people who had gone missing in the landslide at Syabun-3 of Sankhuwasabha district have been declared dead, eKantipur has written.  A meeting of the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee declared the missing as dead as there were no hopes of rescuing the missing ones alive.

Landslide in Jiri, Dolakha claims 4 lives

A landslide in Jiri, Dolakha district of Nepal has claimed lives of at least four people and injured eight others, The Himalayan Times reported. Injured people are having treatment at Charikot District and a hospital in Jiri. Landslide occureed around 1am Saturday morning.

Odisha flooding kills 34 – Mahanadi river affects 1M

Odisha flooding has claimed lives of atleast 34 people and affected nearly one million people in 23 districts, The Hindustan Times has written quoting the Special Disaster Relief Commissioner of Odisha. A total of 11 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 30 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams and 184 boats have been deployed in the vulnerable areas.

Landslide in Sindhupalchowk, Nepal kills 156

Massive landslide in Barhabise area of Sindhupalchowk region of Nepal has blocked the Sunkoshi river. Disaster area lies 1.5 km below the meeting point of Sunkoshi and Bhotekoshi river. The Sun Koshi is one of Nepal’s longest rafting trips. News will be updated below (Nepal time, UTC +05:45).

Japan Landslide in Anan, Tokushima Prefecture kills 1

A landslide in Anan, Tokushima Prefecture of Japan has claimed life of a person, The Weather Channel has reported quoting the Daily Mail. Around 550,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in the Kochi, Tokushima and Ehime regions after the deadly mudslide, Daily Mail added.

Pune Natural Calamities: Malin landslide claims 109 lives including 16 children

Update 16:30 UTC, 2014/08/04 Death toll from Pune landslide has risen to 109. The 109 dead included 44 men, 49 women and 16 children. "The current landslide in Pune is possibly due to human activities like farming and road construction,”  the DNA newspaper has written quoting geologist Satish Thigale. Heavy machinery such as backhoes were used to level the slopes, which has contributed to loosening the soil to such an extent that it has impacted the hill’s drainage of water, The Reuters has mentioned.

Mt. Shindake in Kagoshima, Japan erupts for 1st time in 34 years

Mount Shindake in Kagoshima Prefecture has erupted for the first eruption in 34 years, The Asahi Simbun reported. Mount Shindake volcano located on Kuchinoerabujima island erupted at 12:24 p.m. sending plume of volcanic ash to a height of more than 800 meters.

Light earthquake in Yangon, Myanmar today

M 4.0 light earthquake shakes Myanmar's Yangon region today, the Yangon Hydrology and Meteorology Department mentioned in its website. According to the Yangon Hydrology and Meteorology Department, the earthquake was recorded inside Myanmar (Yangon), about 1 mile west-northwest of Kaba-aye seismological observatory.

Ludian earthquake 2014 kills 381

Very strong earthquake in Ludian county in Zhaotong in southwest China's Yunnan province has claimed lives of 367 people. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, magnitude 6.1 quake's epicenter was located 29 km WSW of Zhaotong. It was 6.2 miles deep.

Tremor felt in Kathmandu following Tibet earthquake

Weak tremors have been felt in northern part of Kathmandu following magnitude 5.2 earthquake in Tibet, Nepal Seismological Center (NSC) mentioned. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 179 km N of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. It was 9.3 miles deep.
