"Fairly strong horizontal motion, I'm on the 8th floor of a 15 floor high rise. Lasted several seconds, induced some light vertigo from my sitting position. Immediately knew it was an earthquake (Southern California resident for years). Just didn't realize it was a fairly big one almost 500 miles away."

-The Hilo Airport being evacuated but Honolulu Airport (HNL) does not plan to close due to tsunami.

A Tsunami Warning means that a tsunami is expected and imminent in low-lying coastal areas. People in these areas must move inland or to higher ground IMMEDIATELY. Do not return until directed to do so by local emergency officials. A tsunami is a series of waves and the first wave is not usually the largest and could last several hours.

M 7.7 powerful earthquake struck off the coast of British Columbia today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was loated 199 km SSW from Prince Rupert, BC. It was 6.2 miles deep.
The Queen Charlotte Islands earthquake of 1949 of magnitude 8.1 struck the sparsely populated Queen Charlotte Islands and the Pacific Northwest coast on August 22, 1949. The 1949 Queen Charlotte Islands earthquake was caused by a rupture on the Queen Charlotte Fault (source wiki).
The greatest earthquake in Canadian history was the 1700 Cascadia earthquake of magnitude 9.

According to this, if tsunami does hit, it will be around the same time Sandy makes landfall. A big doom :O
ReplyDeleteThis is really scary. These two titans of natural disasters should really not come together, the result is just catastrophic. I really pray for everyone's safety at this point.
