Recent Major Disaster Alert

  • Extreme Drought has affected States of Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Guanajuato and Zacatecas in Mexico. It is expected to continue into next year. Note that it is the worst drought in Mexico in last 70 years.
    Mexico is experiencing its worst drought since 1941, with 2.5 million people left without water.
    -Now fourteen other states - Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, Michoacan, Nayarit, Nuevo Leon, Queretaro, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatan  are also experiencing drought-related problems.
    -1.7 million cattle have died of starvation and thirst
    -Lakes and reservoirs are at critical lows
    -Residents of San Jose de los Gonzalez town are running out of water-Crops of corn, beans and oats are withering in the field
    -Mexican farmers have lost 2.2 million acres (900,000 hectares) of crops
  • Galeras Volcanic Eruption in Colombia is raised to Alert level II. Galeras Volcano is located 700 kilometers Colombia’s capital Bogota lies in Colombia’s western Nariio department, near the Ecuadorian border.Tremors are continued in Volcanic areas. An orange warning level has already been issued, which means an eruption could occur in some days or weeks.
    The Regional Disaster Prevention and Attention Committee has started evacuating more than 8,000 people who reside in the nearby communities of La Florida and Narino.

    Most eruptions from Galeras are short and violent.
  • Volcanic Eruption in Ecuador .This volcano has thrown pyroclastic boulders up to a mile from the crater. Earthquake tremors are also recorded in this area. Tungurahua Volcano  of Ecuador region seems active currently. Residents near the Tungurahua Volcano are already noticed to evacuate after a rapid increase of volcanic activity from some days.The loud roars from the site have reportedly shook residential windows up to 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) away.
    -Ecuadorian authorities have issued an Orange alert for populations near the Tungurahua volcano.
    -Authorities have setup emergency refugees for citizens that live close to the Tungurahua
    A red alert was declared last December when Tungurahua -- which means "Throat of Fire" in the indigenous Quechua language -- reactivated, prompting a temporary evacuation of residents and tourists. 
  • Wild fire in the forest of Australia is still causing problem in Gracetown and Ellen Brook. The Western part of Australia is mostly affected by it. Schools in the town area have already closed and an emergency situation has been declared.
    Bushfire in the Margaret River Region is formally declared as a Natural Disaster by the state government which means residents who lost their primary place of residence can claim grants of up to $3,000.
  • Volcanic eruption in Volcán de Fuego region Guatemala shows increasing explosive activity which is one of the country's most active volcanoes.It was observed producing ash clouds reaching 1500-2000 m above the summit.
    UPDATE
    -Fuego's activity has calmed down a bit -Frequent rock avalanches are observed in the "Ash Canyon" on the steep southern  side of the summit cone.

  • Mount Etna Volcano of Italy erupted briefly this morning. Mt Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe.It has the longest period of documented eruptions in the world-Small cloud of ash issuing from the new mouth of the volcano was recorded at 09.07 (CET)
  • Drought in Switzerland with autumn been the driest on record in the country with shortage of snow across the Alps.
  • Volcanic activity in Taiwan seems from active currently. Wandan mud dome erupted suddenly after the gap of a year. Hot gray mud is still spewing from the volcano in Pingtung County.
    The mud volcano usually erupts once of twice a year. It last erupted on Dec. 21 in an area around the Huang Yuan Holy Temple, north of the cemetery.
  • Ammonia explosion in Yuma city, USA. Two people are reported to be injured who have been taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center. Gila Ridge Road has been closed between Avenue 3E and Avenue 5E to clear a path for safety personnel
  • Extreme weather condition in Fairbanks Region, USA.
    -About 2 inch of snow fall in Fairbanks today.
    -Travel is not advised
    -High winds and heavy snow are expected west of Fairbanks this weekend
    -Blizzard warnings were issued yesterday for the west coast of Alaska from Unalakleet to Nome to Point Hope and out to Gambell

  • Magnitude 5.0 moderate aftershocks in Honshu, Japan with epicenter located 212 km (131 miles) SE of Mito, Honshu, Japan. Felt lightly as far as Yokohama city.

  • Magnitude 5.1 moderate earthquake near the North coast of Papua, Indonesia with epicenter in Sea water, 75 km NE Sorong (pop 125,535) and 247 km W Manokwari (pop 53,190), Indonesia. There is Dominique Edward Osok Airport 45 km far from epicenter where the shaking is felt well.

  • Magnitude 5.1 moderate earthquake (@ 32.9 km depth) in Antofagasta, Chile with epicenter in Sea water far from residential area. It is 157 km W Tocopilla (pop 24,460) and 215 km SW Iquique (pop 227,499), Chile. It will be faintly felt.

  • Magnitude 4.6 very shallow moderate earthquake (@ 3.8 km depth) in Central Alaska , North America region with epicenter located 19 km  NNE from Skwentna, ALaska. It will be well felt in Anchorage, Wasilla, Talkeetna, Trapper Creek, Willow, Elmendorf AFB area of Alaska. Max. felt MMI IV which indicates light shaking. There is Hayes Volcano located 52 km far from epicenter.

  • Magnitude 5.6 strong earthquake in East Of Barbuda (Antigua and Barbuda), Caribean region with epicenter located 212 km E from Codrington, Barbuda. The epicenter is in Sea water and far from residential area to cause any damage. About 320,000 people will experience a light shaking of MMI IV. People of Grande Anse, Le Moule, Saint-Francois, Anse-Bertrand, Petit-Canal, Port-Louis, Sainte-Anne, Les Abymes, Le Gosier, Baie-Mahault  area will feel light shaking.

  • Magnitude 5.3 moderate earthquake (@ 59.1 km depth) in Cook Strait, New Zealand with epicenter 30 km SSW of Wellington, New Zealand. It will be well felt in Wellington, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Picton, Otaki, Nelson, Motueka, Masterton, Martinborough, Lower Hutt, Hawera, Blenheim and other neighboring city.

    Lower Hutt: Started with a rumble then rolled for quite a while. Certainly heard it!
  • Magnitude 5.0 moderate shallow earthquake (16 km depth) in Kenya-Ethiopia ,Lake Rudolf region. North Island Volcano lies 60 km far from the epicenter. It will be well felt around epicenter and faintly in wide areas.The populated area Awassa (pop 133,097) is 344 km far from epicenter area. We don't expect any damage from this quake.

  • Magnitude 4.7 moderate shallow earthquake (@9.8 km depth) disaster in Turkey-Iran border region with epicenter located 58 km NE Van (pop 371,713), Turkey. Van, Turkey is the same area where M 7.2 very deadly Turkey earthquake killed 605+ people this November. It will be well felt around epicenter.

  • Minor 3.8 deep earthquake (@143 km depth) in Romania with epicenter 59 km NW Buzau (pop 130,954), Romania. It will be faintly felt in Nehoiu, Gura teghii region.

Recent Volcanoes 

  • Volcanic Eruption On Hierro Canary Islands located in Spain. Hierro contains the greatest concentration of young vents in the Canary Islands. It is great site for tourist attraction but due to Volcanic activities tourist have been decreased by 30%. Tremors are still recorded in this area.
    Some days earlier, the Sarmiento de Gamboa research vessel begins a campaign of research in El Hierro, under the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA), consisting of the geophysical survey of the seabed, both north of the Gulf and in the area submarine eruption near the south of La Restinga. The video aside is of November 27 which shows the area to be seismically active too.
    Red Light, Level 1, in the Restinga (El Pinar) and Yellow light in the rest of the island.

    -About 10 earthquakes recorded yesterday in area of ​​the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands. The magnitude was less to be felt and greater than 20 km depth. In total, since the day July 17, 2011, 11 907 events have been found.
    -The emission rate of sulfur dioxide analyzed by scientists from non-tip is less than 5 tonnes per day.The highest rates of emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere were recorded on 6 November reached 109 ± 19 tonnes per day.
  • Orange code for Kilauea Volcano Located in Hawaii and Pacific Ocean, HI. About 90% of the surface of Kilauea is formed of lava flows less than about 1,100 years old; 70% of the volcano's surface is younger than 600 years. Lava flows active southeast of Pu`u `O`o, Seismic tremor levels low and gas emissions elevate.
    The most recent (preliminary) sulfur dioxide emission rate measurement was 600 tonnes/day on November 29, 2011.

  • Flood in New South Wales states of Australia has killed One child. Still the ALERT is in Northern New South Wales town of Wee Waa where the flood will last for one weeks more. Heavy rains  is predicted in coming months due to a La Nina pattern in the Pacific Ocean in Northeastern Australia
    Moree Plains Shire, Inverell Shire and Armidale Dumaresq local government areas are now declared as Natural disaster areas. The river's still rising at Boggabri which is 7.69 meters currently and the river at Wee Waa is 6.67 meters

Other Disasters

  • Biological disaster in Nepal with outbreak of Bird Flu. H5N1 is found in chickens in area of Manahara, Bhaktapur Nepal. The bird flu was found in chickens of Chandra Bahadur Tamang in Manahara area Bhaktapur,Thimi-16.
    Officially the area is announced as "Bird Flu Area" by Nepal Government.
    Previously it was found in eastern part of Nepal, but this is the first time the bird flu is found near to Capital. In 2009, for the first time Bird Flu was confirmed in Nepal. Different private schools around the area are closed for one week.The vaccines or other treatments are not available for it and it cause severe to fatal disease in humans.
