Powerful 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Ecuador, Resulting in Fatalities and Widespread Damage

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude hit southern Ecuador on March 18, 2023. The earthquake's epicenter was located off the coast of the canton of Balao, about 80 kilometers south of Guayaquil, with a hypocenter depth of 65.8 km. The earthquake resulted in significant damage in the provinces of El Oro, Azuay, and Guayas, causing 446 injuries and 16 fatalities in Ecuador and two fatalities and dozens of injuries in Peru. The USGS reported the earthquake's magnitude as 6.8 Mw with a maximum MMI of VII, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a magnitude of 6.7 Mw. Nearly half of Ecuador's population, or 8.41 million people, felt the earthquake, with intensities of V-VII reported by PAGER. The earthquake resulted from oblique-slip faulting at an intermediate depth near the subduction interface of the Nazca and South American plates. Magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Peru-Ecuador border region

February 22, 2019: An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 has been recorded in Peru-Ecuador border region, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The earthquake occurred at a greater depth of 287 km. It is the reason the earthquake was felt in wider region of Ecuador. It was followed by a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred less than 25 minutes later in western Ecuador, near the city of Guayaquil. According to the National Risk and Emergency Management Service of Ecuador, six people were injured in Gualaquiza, Macas and Cuenca.

At least 400 people have been evacuated amid increasing activity in Cotopaxi volcano, near the capital Quito. Two minor explosions on Friday at Cotopaxi led to a precautionary evacuation. The volcanic eruptions have shot ash more than five kilometres into the sky.

Earthquake triggered landslide in Ecuador kills 2

A landslide triggered by earthquake in Ecuador has claimed lives of at least two people, Reuters reports quoting the National Risk Control Agency. Another eight people have been injured and three others have been trapped in the landslides at quarries on the outskirts of Quito, Inquirer reports mentioning the country’s risk management agency.

Ecuador Reventador Volcano eruption intensifies

Lava flow and ash and gas emissions have intensified at the Ecuador Reventador volcano, Geophysics Institute said. Though the lava flow on southern flank has increased since Saturday, it currently poses no immediate threat to villagers, Ecuador's Geophysics Institute added. Tungurahua volcano also spewed stones, gases and ashes more than 5 km into the sky some days ago. At least 200 people were evacuated and one pyroclastic blast was heard as far as Guayaquil. Landslide in Ecuador buries 14

Landslide in Ecuador has buried at least 14 people, Xinhua news agency reports. Landslide occurred in Tabete in the Chinca district of Esmeraldas, a coastal province in Ecuador. Ecuador landslide covered an area of 300 square meters. Heavy rainfall caused landslide in the area. Landslide in Ecuador in 1993 (Nambija mine disaster) claimed lives of about 300 people. Flooding in Ecuador claims 8 lives

Recent flooding in Ecuador has claimed eight lives. Torrential rainfall caused flooding in Guayas region of Ecuador. At least eight people have been died by recent flooding in Ecuador . Disaster occurred in Guayas, a southwestern state of Ecuador. Out of eight fatalities, six people died by electrocution and two by drowning. It also includes a child who was found dead after his body was washed away by floods. Two emergency shelters have been established for the flood victims. Several flights have been cancelled at the local airport. In January 2013, at least 12 people were killed in Ecuador floods and mudslides .
