M3.5 earthquake rattles Midland, Texas

September 7, 2021: A light earthquake of magnitude 3.5 has been recorded in Midland, Texas today. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located 16 km NNW of Midland, Texas. The earthquake occurred at 72 km depth. The tremor was felt by the people of Midland, Stanton, Gardendale and Odessa.

3.9 magnitude earthquake rattles Vijayapura and Kolhapur today

September 4, 2021: A light earthquake of magnitude 3.9 has been felt in Vijayapura (also called Bijapur) in Karnataka state of India today at 11:49 pm. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the earthquake occurred in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, bordered with Karnataka. The epicenter was located 19 km W of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, the National Center for Seismology confirmed. The earthquake occurred at 39 km depth. The tremor was felt in various cities of Maharashtra and Karnataka. People living in Vijayapura City, Basavana Bagewadi, Tikota, Indi and Sindagi areas ran out of their houses immediately after the tremor. No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported.

NEPAL: Landslide in Parbat kills 6

September 3, 2021: A landslide in Parbat district of Nepal has claimed lives of six people and left two others missing. The recent natural calamity was triggered due to heavy rainfall in the district affecting Durlung of Kushma Municipality and Modi Mural Municipality. Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and locals have been involved in the rescue operation.

First flash flood emergency in New York City

Twitter (National Weather Service in New York)  September 2, 2021: A flash flood emergency has been issued for New York City for the first time in its history. The  National Weather Service in New York has  advised people to move immediately to higher ground, and avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Central Park has received 3.15 inches of rain in just one hour, making it wettest hour in New York City. Apart from this, Hurricane Ida have unleashed flash flooding, tornado watches and warnings between Philadelphia and the Tri-State area. Hurricane Ida was the second most intense hurricane to strike the U.S. state of Louisiana on record. The storm has caused at least $15 billion in insured losses in Louisiana. The New York City Subway has been shut down due to the massive flooding. Fourteen people have been killed till date with seven in New York, three in Louisiana, two in Mississippi, one in Maryland, and one in New Jersey.

Haiti Earthquake 2021: At least 724 killed and 2,800 injured

August 15, 2021: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Haiti has claimed lives of at least 724 people and injured 2,800 people. The earthquake occurred at the  Tiburon Peninsula in the Caribbean nation of Haiti on the island of Hispaniola on August 14, 2021. Haiti earthquake has been categorized as the deadliest earthquake of 2021 which occurred near Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, approximately 150 kilometres west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. According to the United States Geological Survey(USGS), the earthquake occurred as a result of oblique-reverse faulting on the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden fault zone. The earthquake was also strongly felt in Jamaica. According to the Haitian Civil Protection Agency, the Haiti earthquake destroyed at least 860 homes and 700 others have been damaged. INDIA: Earthquake tremor in Gorakhpur today!

Update India's National Center for Seismology has not recorded any earthquake in Gorakhpur or in any region of Uttar Pradesh at that time.  Though people of Gorakhpur have reported of feeling tremor, the reason is still unknown. Main Post June 20, 2021: Hundreds of people shared of an earthquake tremor felt in Gorakhpur today at 02:26 am. We checked national as well as international seismological sites but couldn't get any information about the earthquake. We will update about this seismic event in Gorakhpur once it is verified.

Nepal Floods: Flash flooding in Melamchi kills 7, leaves 60 missing

June 17, 2021: Flash flooding in Helambu and Melamchi areas of Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal have claimed lives of seven people and left sixty others missing. Two fatalities have been identified as Chinese national working at Melamchi Drinking Water Project. Still six Melamchi Drinking Water Project staffs have gone missing including one Chinese national, three Indians and two Nepalese. The recent flood and landslides have damaged around 260 houses and displaced more than 600 people. The helicopters of Nepal Army have been deployed for flood management and the rescue efforts. 5.7 magnitude earthquake felt in Cagayan de Oro (cdo), Philippines today

June 14, 2021: An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 has been recorded near Cagayan de Oro (CDO)  today at 14:38 UTC, the United States Geological Survey confirmed. According to the USGS, earthquake's epicenter was located just 2 km NNW of Don Carlos, Philippines. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. The tremor was well felt across Northern Mindanao.

Cyclone Yaas Update: Yaas to make landfall near Dhamra port of Odisha

  Tropical Cyclone Yaas Live Location, Super Cyclone Yaas Latest Update Live with landfall location: May 25, 2021: A severe cyclonic storm Yaas is a currently strengthening tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal and has become the second severe cyclonic storm of the 2021 North Indian Ocean cyclone season. Severeal low lying areas including East Midnapore and West Midnapore and Jhargram. Hooghly, Kolkata and North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas have been kept under high alert. At 11:30 UTC today, the cylone Yaas was located about 200 km SSE of Paradip, 290 km SSE of Balasore and 290 km SSE of Digha. The people have been evacuated in the Chandipur area of Odisha's Balasore district. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in India has deployed 65 teams for the possible disaster. The rescue and relief teams of the Indian army, navy, and the coast guard have also deployed over the coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal. Lamjung earthquake: Dozens of aftershocks recorded, at least six injured

Lamjung earthquake's epicenter location Update 17:25 pm - The first major earthquake of magnitude 5.8 was recorded at 05:42 am in Lamjung. It was followed by 4.0 light earthquake at 08:16 am, 4.1 earthquake at 08:17 am and 5.3 moderate earthquake at 08:26 am. -According to the Nepal Seismological Center, around two dozens aftershocks with magnitude less than 4 have been recorded in last 10 hours. -The earthquake epicenter is located at Bhulbhule of Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-3 in Lamjung district of Nepal. -Six people have been injured and returned home after having treatment at district hospital. The injured people have been reported from Beshisahar, Dordi and Marsyangdi Rural Municipality. -The earthquake has damaged around 30 houses. 5.1-magnitude earthquake rattles Bhutan

 April 5, 2021:  An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 rattled Bhutan with epicenter located 33 km NNW of Samtse, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed. According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 8.4 km. The tremor was widely felt across different areas of Bhutan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal. In India, most of the felt reports have been received from Gangtok, Darjeling, Kalimpong areas. The earthquake was even felt in Thimpu, the capital city of Bhutan.  Similarly, the people of Bhadrapur, Damak, Biratnagar and Dharan areas of Nepal reported about the tremor. The tremor was felt by most of cities in eastern part of Nepal. 

INDIA: Chamoli glacial outburst flood kills 26, leaves 200 missing

February 8, 2021: A glacial outburst flood in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand region of India has claimed lives of 26 people and left around 200 people missing. The flooding occurred after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off early on 7th of February. The flood damaged the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army have been involved for the rescue operation. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has announced Rs 4 lakh financial assistance each for the families of those killed in the disaster.

Floods and landslides in Paraguay kill 10

February 5, 2021: Heavy floods and landslide triggered by heavy rainfall have claimed lives of at least 10 people in central and southern Paraguay over the past few days. Five people died in the Central Department, our in the Asuncion Metropolitan area and one in the Itapua Department.

Flooding and landslides kill two in Santa Catarina, Brazil

January 26, 2021: Flooding and landslides have claimed lives of at least two people in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Around 70 people were evacuated from the Lagoa da Conceicao area after floodwater damaged at least 35 homes. More than 2,000 people have been affected by flooding in Guabiruba, Itajai Valley. According to the Civil Defense, 86 mm of rainfall was recorded in a 3-hour period.

Tropical Cyclone Eloise kills 12 in Mozambique and Zimbabwe

January 24, 2021: Tropical Cyclone Eloise has claimed lives of nine people in Mozambique and three in Zimbabwe. Cyclone Eloise caused damage in in Beira, Manica, and Quelimane areas of  Mozambique. According to the Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), the cyclone has damaged around 1069 homes, 11 hospitals and nine schools. Tropical Cyclone Eloise made landfall just south of the port city of Beira, Mozambique on January 23, 2021.  Eloise is the 5th named storm of the 2020/21 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season.

Rotorua earthquake 2021: Earthquake swarm across Bay of Plenty and Rotorua area

January 24, 2021: A series of earthquakes have been recorded near Rotorua, New Zealand.  According to the GeoNet, around 70 tremors have been recorded across Bay of Plenty and Rotorua area. The largest earthquake was measured 4.9 on the Richter Scale  with the epicenter located around 20 km east of Rotorua. At 7.57am an earthquake measuring 4.5 struck at a depth of 8 km, 20 km east of Rotorua. There are dozens of earthquakes between 3.3 and 3.8 magnitude that are part of what GeoNet is calling a swarm - all centred in the same location. GeoNet received more than 4,000 earthquake felt reports. While, the Earthquake Commission also received ten damage claims till the evening. GeoNet twitter message "This looks like a swarm - we often see these in this area (the Okataina volcanic centre), and there were small foreshocks yesterday. The last swarm with quakes of this size was in Rotoehu in July 2004."

South Shetland Islands earthquake measures 6.9 in magnitude

Earthquake's epicenter map of South Shetland islands January 23, 2021: A strong earthquake has been recorded in the South Shetland Islands in the Antarctica today. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake in the South Shetland Islands had a magnitude of 6.9 with a depth of 9.6 kilometers. Chile’s Interior Ministry issued a tsunami warning following the quake. Strong tremors were felt in the Chilean capital Santiago. Hundreds of people were ready to evacuate in the coastal region of La Serena after receiving evacuation message on their cellphone.  However, the authorities said it as a technical error and the locals were informed about the false alarm later. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center clarified there’s no tsunami threat to Caribbean coasts from the earthquake in South Shetland Islands today.

Severe flood hits Bolivia — One killed in Cochabamba

January 20, 2021: One person died in Cochabamba, while around 13,000 people have been affected due to severe floods in Bolivia. Recent floods have affected seven out of Bolivia's nine provinces. The worst affected areas are Cochabamba, Beni and Pando. The Taquina river overflowed and damaged several houses and road sections.
