7.5 earthquake near Sand Point, Alaska prompts tsunami warning

October 20, 2020: A magnitude 7.5 earthquake near Sand Point, Alaska Peninsula triggered a tsunami warning causing locals to evacuate to higher ground. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the North Pacific Ocean about 55 miles southeast of Sand Point. The earthquake caused a tsunami warning along roughly 500 miles of the Alaska Peninsula coastline . The warning extended from Kennedy Entrance, 40 miles southwest of Homer, to Unimak Pass, 80 miles northeast of Unalaska. The tsunami waves reached a height of 2.2 feet above the tide in Sand Point. According to the USGS, the 7.5 earthquake in Alaska occurred as the result of strike-slip faulting near the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates, either within the upper (North America) Plate or within the downgoing (Pacific) slab.  Large earthquakes are common in the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone. Westmorland, California earthquake swarm: More than 240 earthquakes recorded

October 1, 2020: More than 240 earthquakes have been recorded near Westmorland, California. A 4.9 magnitude earthquake is the latest and strongest earthquake to strike near Westmorland. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the magnitude 4.9 earthquake was located 4 km NE of Westmorland, California. The earthquake swarm began around 4 p.m., when a 3.0 magnitude temblor struck. At least 240 earthquakes were recorded by 8 p.m. USGS confirmed that the earthquake and the associated swarms are located in an area of diffuse seismic activity between the San Andreas fault in the north and the Imperial fault to the south.  It’s less likely, but possible, that a larger quake with a magnitude up to 6.9 will strike, according to the earthquake forecast by the USGS. September 9, 2020: A magnitude 3.1 earthquake have been felt by the northern half of New Jersey early Wednesday morning. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers about 1.5 miles outside of the town of Freehold. The tremor was felt across northern New Jersey and into parts of New York and Pennsylvania as well.

Hurricane Laura kills 71, causes damage of 8.9 billion USD

September 5, 2020: Hurricane Laura, the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the U.S. state of Louisiana, claimed lives of 71 people and caused damage of around $8.9 billion. Hurricane Laura made landfall in southwest Louisiana at 1 a.m. on Aug. 27 as a Category 4 storm. Hurricane Laura killed 31 people in Haiti and four in the Dominican Republic. The storm caused the deaths of at least 36 people in the U.S.

April 21, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 has been recorded in Odessa, Texas today, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. According to the USGS, the earthquake's epicenter was located 11 km NE of Odessa and 21 km ENE of Midland, Texas, United States. April 19, 2020: An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 has been recorded near Carpinteria, California today, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed. According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of less than 1 km.  The quake's epicenter was located 12 km SW of Carpinteria and 26 km far from Santa Barbara. USGS received earthquake felt reports from Carpinteria, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Summerland, Ojai and Montecito. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency confirms 6 deaths due to recent tornadoes

April 13, 2020: The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has confirmed six deaths due to tornadoes across several southern US states . In Mississippi, three deaths were confirmed in Jefferson Davis County, two in Lawrence and one in Walthall. Tornadoes touched down in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Mississippi governor Tate Reeves has declared a state of emergency after several tornadoes struck the state. Around 300 homes and other buildings were damaged in northern Louisiana. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued tornado watches and warnings for several states including Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

Tornado warning issued for Onslow County, NC

April 13, 2020: A tornado warning has been issued for Central Onlosw County, North Carolina.  At 09:57 am EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Belgrade or 11 miles northeast of Piney Green and was moving northeast at 60 mph. Locations that could be impacted Jacksonville, New River Station, Pumpkin Center, Piney Green, Camp Lejeune Center, Swansboro, Hubert, Maysville, Silverdale, Kellum, Midway Park, Belgrade, Catfish Lake, Deppe and Loco VFD. At least six people have already died after storms triggered tornadoes and flooding in Mississippi . Tornadoes touched down in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Mississippi governor Tate Reeves has declared a state of emergency .

Maine earthquake 2020: Small earthquake near Winterport

April 11, 2020: A small earthquake of magnitude 2.1 has been recorded in Maine today at 10:36 am UTC, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.  According to the USGS, the quake's epicenter was located 2 km NW of Winterport, Maine. USGS received earthquake felt reports from Maine and Bangor. No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported.

April 11, 2020: A series of earthquakes shook the California-Nevada border near the Yosemite National Park with recent one of magnitude 5.2 near Bodie, California. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), magnitude 5.2 moderate earthquake in California today at 7:36 am had its epicenter located 30km SE of Bodie and 51 km SSW of Mammoth Lakes. Two hours later, another temblor of magnitude 4.6 rattled the same area. Two more earthquakes with magnitude 4.1 and 3.9 were recorded in the same region around 10 a.m. USGS received earthquake felt reports from Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, Arnoid, Sonora, Yosemite National Park, El Portal, Mariposa, Pioneer, South Lake Tahoe, June Lake and as far as Placerville and Merced. Earthquake in Wyomissing, PA today measures 1.3: USGS

April 9, 2020: A small earthquake of magnitude 1.3 has been recorded in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania today, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed. According to the USGS, the earthquake in Wyomissing today occurred at 5 km depth. The epicenter was located 3.5 km ENE of Reading and 78.1 km W of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The tremor was well felt by the people of Wyomissing and Reading, Pennsylvania. According to the USGS, people in the Lancaster seismic zone of southeastern Pennsylvania have felt small earthquakes and suffered damage from larger ones.

March 31, 2020: Strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 has been recorded in Idaho at 05:52 pm local time, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. According to the USGS, the earthquake's epicenter was located 72km W of Challis, Idaho. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth. The earthquake was felt by the residents from Nevada to Montana. Tornado damage reported in Mississippi and Alabama

March 24, 2020: A large tornado ripped across northeastern Mississippi and northwestern Alabama causing injuries and damage in the town of Tishomingo, Mississippi, near the Alabama state line. According to the Weather Channel, a Dollar General store was destroyed in Tishomingo. The National Weather Service in Memphis confirmed the tornado moved through shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time.
