Six Lives Lost as Heavy Rains Unleash Devastating Floods in Sri Lanka

October 6, 2023: Sri Lanka grapples with the aftermath of heavy rains that have claimed the lives of at least six people, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing tens of thousands. In a tragic incident in Colombo on Friday, a large tree fell onto a moving bus, resulting in five fatalities and 17 injuries, as reported by the state-run Lankapuvath news agency. Separately, in the Galle district, a rock tumbled onto a house during a mudslide, claiming one more life, according to the Disaster Management Center. The floods have not only taken a toll on human lives but have also caused extensive damage to hundreds of homes across 12 districts, affecting more than 50,000 people. In response, authorities have relocated 1,473 families to temporary shelters. The coastal district of Matara bears the brunt of the disaster, with most parts submerged for over a week. Flooding in Sri Lanka (Xinhua News Agency) June 2, 2017: Cyclone mora caused massive flooding and landslides throughout Sri Lanka claiming lives of atleast 203 people and left 96 others missing. According to the Disaster Management Centre, more than 400,000 people have been affected by the severe rains and strong winds that started on 24 May, 2017. The recent flooding is the worst to hit the island since May 2003, when 250 people were killed and 10,000 homes destroyed. More than 600,000 people are currently temporarily homeless after the landslides and floods hit Sri Lanka.

Floods and landslides kill 8 in Sri Lanka

At least eight people have been killed due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka. Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has instructed officials to close the schools in disaster areas if problem continue, news.lk , The Official Government News Portal of Sri Lanka mentioned.

Recent flooding in Sri Lanka kills 24, leaves 8 missing

Recent flooding in Sri Lanka has claimed lives of 24 people and left 8 others missing, Dailymirror has written quoting the National Disaster Management Centre. The floods have also destroyed 4,593 houses and damaged further 14,649 houses. According to the Daily News, eight bodies have been recovered in the Rilpola Haliela landslide affected area in Badulla and another seven persons are still missing.

Sri Lanka flash flood maroons over 35,000

Torrential rains and flashfloods in Sri Lanka have marooned more than 35,000 people, disaster management officials said on Sunday. According to the National Disaster Management Centre, around 30,000 people are from the worst hit Batticaloa district in eastern Sri Lanka. Nearly 14,000 people are having shelter in 107 welfare camps.

Floods in Sri Lanka kill 23, displace over 100,000: Disaster Management Center

Floods in Sri Lanka have claimed lives of at least 23 and displaced more than 100,000 people, Xinhua reported quoting the Disaster Management Center. Most of the fatalities and flood damage have been reported from the Kalutara District where disaster relief efforts are going on, Disaster Management Center added. Flooding in six districts of Sri Lanka have completely destroyed nearly 235 houses and partially damaged another 1,566 homes, Daily Mirror Sri Lanka reported. Disaster Management Centre to conduct Tsunami drill in Sri Lanka

A tsunami drill will be conducted in coastal districts of Sri Lanka today, the Disaster Management Centre said. Tsunami drill will cover 14 coastal districts of Sri Lanka at 3:00 p.m. local time, Daily Mirror has reported quoting the Disaster Management Centre. Sri Lanka storm kills 18, other 36 missing

Monsoon storms in Sri Lanka have claimed lives of at least 18 people and made other 36 missing, Colombo Page reported. Disaster occurred after boats carrying fisherman caught in rough waters, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development officer said. Special operation by the Navy and Air Force have rescued 20 fisherman but 36 are still missing at sea. Armies have been deployed for disaster cleanup. Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology had issued a weather alert earlier obstructing fisherman to go to the sea area. Cyclonic storm in Sri Lanka in May 2013 claimed several lives. 'Nameless cyclone' in Sri Lanka causes flooding, 7 killed

Update -Death toll from flooding in Sri Lanka has risen to 7. -Following Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre, still two people are missing. Flooding caused by the cyclone Mahasen in Sri Lanka (name not used in Sri Lanka) has killed two and injured eight others, Disaster Management Center (DMC) official says. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has warned of possible landslides in Ratnapura, Matale, Galle, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts of Sri Lanka, Daily Mirror reports. Following Sri Lanka Meteorological Department, storm Mahasen is moving away from Sri Lanka.  The Meteorology Department has decided not to use the name “Mahasen” any longer for this cyclone. However the officials didn't give any reason behind it. The storm named "Mahasen" is after an ancient Sri Lankan king. Now this cyclone remains nameless in Sri Lanka.
