Floods and landslides kill 8 in Sri Lanka

At least eight people have been killed due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has instructed officials to close the schools in disaster areas if problem continue, news.lk, The Official Government News Portal of Sri Lanka mentioned.

Nearly 5,000 families living in flooded areas have been moved to relief centres, The Japan Times reported quoting Disaster management centre spokesman Pradeep Kodippili.

At least three flights which were schedule to land at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayaka have been diverted. Similarly, a flight from Dubai has been diverted to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport while a flight from Mumbai and Kuala Lampur have been diverted to Kochi, India.

A tropical low pressure system will threaten Sri Lanka and southern India this week bringing flooding downpours, according to AccuWeather.

The Meteorology Department has issued a bad weather warning which will bring heavy rains likely in the Southern and Eastern areas of Sri Lanka. Local people have been advised to be alert.
