Flood warning in Sri Lanka - 3 killed, over 8,000 affected by severe weather

May 20, 2018: Flood warnings have been issued to several areas of Sri Lanka as a result of the heavy downpour.

The people living in the low lying areas of Madurawala, Horana, Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya and Palinda Nuwara divisional secretariat areas, have been advised to remain vigilant.


Three people were killed and more than 8,000 affected as heavy rains and strong winds lashed out across Sri Lanka, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The three deaths, caused by lightning, were reported from the Eastern District of Trincomalee and in the lower central hills of Badulla.

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Meteorology Department this morning (20th May) has issued a heavy rain and lightning advisory for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Central provinces as well as the districts of Galle and Matara.

Southwest monsoon conditions are getting established over the island.

Prevailing rainy condition along with cloudy skies in the South-west part of the island is expected to continue for tomorrow.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces.

Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere particularly after 2.00 p.m.

Very heavy falls, about 150 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa province.

Heavy falls, above 100 mm can be expected at some places, particularly in Western Central and Uva provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
