Wildfire prompts emergency in Harmanli, Bulgaria

A state of emergency has been declared due to raging wildfire in Harmanli municipality of southern Bulgaria on Thursday. Wildfire has affected Mladinovo, Dripchevo, Oryahovo and Izvorovo villages, Sofia News Agency reported.

Code orange weather warning issued in 12 Bulgaria districts

A code orange weather warning has been issued in twelve Bulgaria districts because of the heavy downpours observed in the past 24 hours. Weather warning is in active in Silistra, Dobrich, Shumen, Varna, Burgas, Yambol, Haskovo, Kardzhali, Smolyan, Plovdiv, Pazardzhik and Blagoevgrad district of Bulgaria, Sofia News Agency reported.

Violent hailstorm in Bulgaria's capital Sofia kills 1, injures 40

A severe hailstorm in Bulgaria's capital city of Sofia has claimed life of a 70-year-old pedestrian and injured 40 others, The Sofia News Agency reported. The storm knocked down a tree on the pedestrian in the park Borisova Gradina. Injured people are having treatment in the emergency center of the Pirogov hospital. According to the Sofia News Agency, the central district of Stochna Gara has been flooded and traffic there has been completely blocked. Many buildings have been flooded, including the Sofia Emergency care main building. Hundreds of owners of damaged cars have been queuing for hail storm insurance claims, The Sofia News Agency added. Avalanche in Bulgaria's Rila Mountain kills a military pilot

Avalanche in Bulgaria's Rila Mountain has claimed life of a man, FOCUS News Agency reported. Avalanche in Bulgaria's Rila Mountain hit the 54-year-old military pilot belonging from the Bulgarian capital city Sofia last night. The Mountain Rescue Service found the body of the man covered with snow. Avalanche in Bulgaria's Rila Mountain injured three people in January 2013. Earthquakes today: Bulgaria hit by several earthquakes

Update 04:05 UTC Two more light earthquakes have hit Bulgaria. Recent ones are slightly stronger with magnitude 4 plus. Magnitude 4.3 earthquake hit 13 km S of Bansko at 03:22 UTC. The twin earthquakes today hit Bulgaria's Blagoevgrad area, European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. The tremors in Bulgaria - with magnitudes of 3.9 and 3.5 hit in an interval of around 20 minutes. The first 3.9-magnitude quake struck at 01:24 UTC located 11 km SE of Blagoevgrad and the second, measuring 3.5-magnitude, hit in the same region at 01:48 UTC, according to the EMSC. Both Bulgarian earthquakes today were 7.7 miles deep. No damage or injury has been reported from Bulgaria earthquakes. Recent study has found at least seven seismic spots in Bulgaria which can cause earthquakes beyond magnitude 6.5. Bulgaria coal mine landslide claims 2

A landslide in a coal mine in Bulgaria has claimed lives of at least two people and left others two missing. Bodies of miners were found buried in mud and rocks underneath 50 meters of land masses. Fire trucks and ambulances have already reached the site, Sofia News Agency reported. Coal mine landslide occurred at 9:45 a.m. local time in the Oranovo mine near Simitli town. Lightning in Bulgaria kills 1, injures 2

Lightning near the Bulgarian town of Gotse Delchev, Southern Bulgaria has claimed life of a woman and injured two others. Thunderstorm and lightning hit them as they were taking shelter from the rain under a tree. Injured people are having treatment in a hospital in Sofia. They are out of danger. Torrential rain hits Bulgarian city of Ruse

Torrential rain and thunderstorms have hit Ruse, Bulgarian National Radio reported. Dozen of cars were stranded in the flood waters. Rain continued for nearly two hours. No flood damage or injury has been reported. The Danube River which has already caused flooding in Slovakia is expected to come to Bulgaria and Romania on June 14. European Commission disasters center has 30 teams for flood management and assistance, Bulgaria's EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva said. Windstorm in Gabrovo, Bulgaria kills 1: State of emergency declared

Windstorm in Bulgarian Gabrovo has killed a 20-year-old woman. State of emergency has been declared in Gabrovo . Strong wind in Gabrovo region of Bulgaria has killed a 20-year-old woman. The woman died in hospital where she was transported in critical stage after hit by scaffolding swept by storm wind. State of emergency has been declared in Gabrovo district of Bulgaria. Train services between Tryavna-Plachkovtsi have been suspended. All schools in Gabrovo will be closed on March 15. Following Tanya Hristova, Mayor of Gabrovo Municipality, the wind speed in Gabrovo exceeds 120 km/hr. The strongest wind is registered in Kardzhali, 28m/s with gusts of 34 m/s.  Nine teams of Fire Safety and Civil Protection are on the disaster zone. There is currently no power supply in Tryavna Municipality.
