Laos landslides kill 16

Landslides in Laos have claimed lives of at least sixteen people and washed away 38 houses, local authorities said.

Landslides caused by two days of heavy rain buried several houses in Pakbaeng district, Oudomxay province of Laos. Fatalities are from Phearhuanam village of Pakbaeng district.

According to the Children’s charity Plan International, more than 1,700 people have been affected by Laos landslides.

Several areas in Pakbaeng district are currently without power and telephone connections.

Laos claims to have effective disaster preparedness committees set up at village level and district level.
