Why do people actually believe in Doomsday predictions? Why they think that the World will end today December 21, 2012?
The main reason is the Mayan Calendar Prediction. NASA says many of these world ending on december 21, 2012 rumors involve the Mayan calendar ending in 2012 (it won’t), a comet causing catastrophic effects (definitely not), a hidden planet sneaking up and colliding with us (no and no), and many others.

According to New Scientist, who looked at the issue back in May 2012, the most basic explanation is simple – if it is part of your religious beliefs, you believe in the prediction that is tied to your faith. Whether it is the Rapture, Armageddon, or End of Days if it is a teaching of your basic beliefs then you are more likely to be on board.

According to Dr. Doug Weaver, Associate Professor of Religion and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Religion and Baylor University, our view of the apocalypse, doomsday or “end of times” is a complex mix of faith and our basic natural behavior of wanting to know what’s next.

Below, NASA Scientists answer questions on end of the world:

*Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
-The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

* Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
-Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

What special about Friday December 21, 2012? Friday will be the shortest day of the year for Northern Hemisphere dwellers, while folks in the South will enjoy the most sunshine of 2012 on that date.
The world will not end on December 21, 2012, or any day in 2012.
