Forest fires in Riau, Indonesia affect 20,000 – Haze drops visibility to 50 meters, emergency declared

At least 20,000 people in Riau province of Indonesia have suffered respiratory problems due to thick smog from the recent forest fires, Xinhua reported. Satellite has detected some 1,234 hot spots in the forests as of Monday, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) agency said. Forest fires in Riau Province has reduced the visibility to about only 50 meters. The thick smog has also caused delay of flights in the Sultan Syarif Kasim airport. Forest fires have burned four houses and half of a school building in Bukit Batu subdistrict. Riaus disaster mitigation office has declared a state of emergency in the districts of Pelalawan, Bengkalis, Dumai city, and Meranti islands. A large-scale air quality disaster caused by continued uncontrolled burning from plantation cultivation in Indonesia hit Singapore and Malaysia in 2013. Update 05:45 UTC According to Nicole Goodfellow who is currently in Bayswater, Melbourne, the earthquake was quite loud/strong. Earthquake was felt in Boronia , Ferntree Gully, Doncaster, Wantirna, Mitcham, Croydon and other surrounding areas. No immediate damage or injuries have been reported. Italy flood kills 2, evacuates 1,700

Havana flooding kills 2

Heavy flooding in Havana has claimed lives of at least two people, the official state newspaper of Cuba, Granma reported. Fatalities are reported to be a 60 year old woman and 54 year old man. Both died in the building collapse in Havana. Recent flooding has badly affected Artemisa province in the west of Cuba. The Cuban weather service expects similar weather even tomorrow. Iran earthquake near nuclear plant kills 8, injures 210

Earthquake near Iran's nuclear plant has claimed lives of at least eight people and injured 210 others. At least 250 houses have been collapsed by the quake. M 5.6 strong earthquake shakes Borazjan area, Iran today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 14 km NE of Borazjan. Iran's sole nuclear power plant in Bushehr lies about 70km away from the epicenter of the earthquake. Flooding in Trang, Thailand kills 3, disaster zone declared

Flooding in Trang province of Thailand has claimed lives of at least three people and displaced tens of thousands of people in the south. Disaster prevention and mitigation office has put eight districts of Songkhla under disaster list. Strong wind damaged more than 100 houses in Chumphon, Bangkok Post reported. Cyclone Cleopatra kills 18 in Sardinia, emergency declared

Cyclone Cleopatra has claimed lives of at least 18 people in Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. Fatalities are from Olbia and Uras areas of the Island. Cyclone Cleopatra dropped 450mm of rain in an hour and a half overnight prompting the government to declared a state of emergency, Itlaian newspapers reported. Tacloban Typhoon Yolanda death toll could reach 10,000

The death toll from Tacloban Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) could reach 10,000, Philippines official said today. Latest report comes from Regional police chief Elmer Soria quoting Leyte provincial Gov. Dominic Petilla. There are varying estimates of the number of fatalities, including at least 1,200 according to the Philippines Red Cross. However, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is reporting 151 fatalities, 23 injured and five others missing. Wild weather lashes New South Wales, 6 injured

At least six people have been injured as wild weather hit New South Wales, Australia, Tuesday afternoon. Trees and power lines fell on three people at Engadine in Sydney's south, The Guardian reported. They were immediately taken to St George hospital in a stable condition. Around 280 calls have been received by the State Emergency Service for assistance. A severe weather warning is currently in place for parts of the greater Newcastle, Cessnock and Maitland areas. Heavy rainfall has flooded at least 26 houses in Gua Musang district of Pahang, Malaysia, The Star Online reported. Several of the 100 residents have been forced to leave their homes in Kampung Batu Papan, Kampung Kundur and Kampung Pulai villages of Gua Musang. Hail, lightning and high winds hit Southeast Queensland

Hail, lightning and high winds hit Southeast Queensland, Australia leaving a trail of destruction. A freak lightning strike on a tree in Sunnybank caused extensive damage to nearby homes, news.com.au reported. Wind gusts of 124km/h with 2cm hail stones have been recorded in Oakey. Landslide in Dhankuta, Nepal buries 13 houses

Landslides near Mulghat of Dhankuta, Nepal have buried some thirteen houses, local medias reported. According to The Republice, landslides in Mahabharat, Budhimorang and Bhedetar VDCs have displaced more than 100 people. Landslides have also obstructed Koshi highway at several parts. Flooding in Missouri, United States has claimed lives of at least three people including a child and his mother. Flood water swept away their car in Missouri. Another woman was swept away by overflowing creek outside of Jane, in the southwestern region of Missouri, NBC News reported. More than 100 people were evacuated to safer place Thursday night. According to Fox2Now, more than 40 roads throughout the state, mostly in central Missouri, remain closed due to flooding. Flash flood warnings were also in effect in parts of Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Tennessee. More than 50 houses were flooded in Waynesville some days ago.
