Thousands evacuated as strong Typhoon Dujuan nears Taiwan

Strong Typhoon Dujuan (Typhoon Jenny in Philippines) is forecast to bring torrential rains and high winds across Taiwan, with landfall predicted around 15:00 GMT Monday.

Almost 3,000 people, most of them tourists, were evacuated Sunday from Taiwan's Green Island and Orchid Island, Yahoo News reported.

Typhoon Dujuan caused the cancellation of Bon Jovi’s concert at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall on September 28.

More than 24,000 troops are on standby for disaster relief and evacuations, with 100 shelters set up. Emergency response centres have been established in the north and east.

Typhoon Dujuan is forecast to make landfall over Fujian, China on September 29. Taiwan's weather bureau has upgraded Dujuan to a "strong typhoon" Sunday - its top category.
