Avalanche in Austria today kills Australian woman, critically injures other

An avalanche in Austria today has claimed life of a 27-year-old Australian woman and critically injured a 30-year-old man.

According to the Tyrol Police, two helicopters were involved in the rescue operation. Injured person is having treatment at an Innsbruck hospital, 80 km to the east.

State police have confirmed that a group of four Australians were off-piste (backcountry) snowboarding, in the district of Landeck in Tyrol when they were hit by a 150 metre-wide avalanche, ABC News reported.

Two other Australians in the group remain uninjured, Austrian media reports said.
