Sydney Storm: 100 properties damaged, worst predicted for Saturday

A severe thunderstorm that hit parts of Sydney, Australia has damaged more than 100 properties, The Reuters reported.

More thunderstorms, hail and powerful winds are expected in New South Wales. Saturday is likely to be the worst day with heavy rains across one third of the state, News.com.au reported.

One lightning strike caused a fire at a kiosk at Rooty Hill in Sydney's west while Asquith Public School was hit by lightning.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service received about 300 calls for help overnight.

Insurance claims worth $482 million - involving 17,500 homes and 51,470 cars - had already been lodged, The Insurance Council of Australia said The Courier Mail.

According to the Queensland’s weather bureau, heavy rain and damaging winds are expected to lash Conondale and the ranges south of Jimna on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) has highlighted eight simple things that we can do to prepare our home and help reduce the potential storm damage.
  • Maintain your yard and balcony. Secure or store items that could blow around in strong winds
  • Clean your gutters, downpipes and drains regularly to prevent blockages
  • Trim trees and branches that could potentially fall on your home or property
  • Fix any damage to your roof, including broken or missing tiles
  • Check your insurance policy is current and adequate
  • Make a Home Emergency Plan for your family that outlines what you would do in an emergency
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essential items in case you lose power or need to leave home in an emergency
  • Listen to your local radio station and other media for weather warnings
