Tropical Cyclone Hudhud kills 24 in India

Tropical cyclone Hudhud made landfall near the port-city of Visakhapatnam at 11:30 AM on October 12.

Death toll from cyclone Hudhud has risen to 24, the Reuters reported. According to the Visakhapatnam authorities, 19 helicopters have been dispatched to drop food and water packets to affected villages.
Cyclone Hudhud triggered heavy rainfalls in Nepal on Monday. Heavy snowfall is expected in upper himalayan region of Nepal on Tuesday.

The death toll from  cyclonic storm Hudhud has risen to 21, Indian Express reported quoting the State Disaster Management Authority. Fifteen deaths have been reported from Visakhapatnam district, five from Vizianagaram and one from Srikakulam.

As assessment of damage caused by the cyclone Hudhud has shown an estimated of about 70 to 80 per cent of destruction in Vishakhapatnam or Vizag , NDTV mentioned the saying of S S Guleria, Deputy Inspector General of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF).

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu O Panneerselvam has announced an assistance package including Rs. 5 crore aid to cyclone hit Andhra Pradesh, Daily Bhaskar reported in its online news site.

According to the Hindustan Times, the third One-Day International between India and the West Indies, scheduled in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday was also called off after the cyclone 'Hudhud' hit the port city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

In Visakhapatnam, the administration has opened 175 shelters and moved close to 40,000 people from the coastal villages. 

The penultimate danger signal no. 10 is raised at the posts of Kalingapatnam, Bhimunipatnam, Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram, The Hindustan Times reported.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), Vizag airport and Hindustan Shipyard Limited have suspended all operations temporarily, Times of India mentioned. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has mobilized 35 teams in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), two killed have died in rain-related incidents in Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts under the influence of severe cyclone Hudhud.

Hudhud has been named after the national bird of Israel, Hoopoe. The name was suggested by Oman.  Hudhud is the strongest tropical cyclone of 2014 within the North Indian Ocean.
