Four killed as freak hailstorm rains hit Marathwada, India

At least four people have been killed when heavy rains accompanied with hailstorm and winds hit several parts of Marathwada region of India. Fatalities are from Jalna, Osmanabad, Beed and Aurangabad districts. Twelve school students from Soygaon tehsil's Jamthi village have also been injured while returning from school to Rachala village, Web India News reported. $7.5 million FEMA preparedness grants awarded to fire departments

More than $7.5 million preparedness grants have been awarded to the fire departments in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Federal Emergency Management Agency grants will be used by fire departments to boost hiring efforts for firefighters and for recruitment and retention, FEMA news release mentioned. A dark cloud has exploded about 1,000 feet in the air from Poas volcano eruption, NY Daily News reported quoting the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI). The Poas volcano in Costa Rica erupted just after noon Tuesday in Poas Volcano National Park. At least two phreatic eruptions were recorded at the Poas volcano in August 2013. Forest fires in Riau, Indonesia affect 20,000 – Haze drops visibility to 50 meters, emergency declared

At least 20,000 people in Riau province of Indonesia have suffered respiratory problems due to thick smog from the recent forest fires, Xinhua reported. Satellite has detected some 1,234 hot spots in the forests as of Monday, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) agency said. Forest fires in Riau Province has reduced the visibility to about only 50 meters. The thick smog has also caused delay of flights in the Sultan Syarif Kasim airport. Forest fires have burned four houses and half of a school building in Bukit Batu subdistrict. Riaus disaster mitigation office has declared a state of emergency in the districts of Pelalawan, Bengkalis, Dumai city, and Meranti islands. Jayapura landslide kills 11, two missing

Landslide in Jayapura, Indonesia has claimed lives of at least 11 people and left two others missing, Xinhua reported quoting national disaster mitigation agency. Three rivers burst their banks and caused flash flooding in the area. Flooding and landslides have left 15 houses badly damaged and 40 houses lightly damaged. Heavy rainfall caused landslides in several parts of Jayapura. Floodwater swept away houses when the Anafri River burst its banks in Kloofkamp. State-owned electricity company PT PLN has been asked to suspend the electricity supply in the city to avoid accidents. Rescue teams have been evacuating residents in the flooded areas, Jakarta Post reported quoting the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Heavy snow in Japan claims 10 lives

Heavy snowfalls in Japan have claimed lives of at least 10 people and injured nearly a thousand. According to the Xinhua News Service, record snowfalls have been observed at 15 locations in Japan’s Kanto and Koshinersu regions. Around 600 flights in Tokyo International Airport have been cancelled. About 49 cm of snow has been recorded in Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture, an amount not seen in 120 years. M 4.1 moderate earthquake shakes South Carolina today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 12 km WNW of Edgefield. It was 3.0 miles deep. The tremors were also felt in much of northern Georgia and even in southeastern Tennessee. Slight damage has been reported in the floor of Edgefield County Hospital. Java's Kelud volcano eruption kills 3, some 200,000 told to evacuate

Mount Kelud volcano eruption in Java, Indonesia has claimed lives of at least three people and forced evacuation of some 200,000 people. According to the Indonesia's disaster agency, Mount Kelud eruption could be heard up to 125 miles away. Java's Kelud volcano eruption also closed airports of Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Surabaya.  The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation expects little chance of another eruption and the National Search and Rescue Agency has warned residents not to return home as lava was still flowing through some villages. Burundi floods, landslides kill 60

Flooding and landslides in Burundi have claimed lives of at least 60 people, the Burundi Red Cross officials said. The natural disaster in Burundi, which started Sunday, has injured over 100 people and destroyed more than 400 houses. Flooding and landslides have caused huge damage in capital Bujumbura and neighboring provinces of Cibitoke and Bubanza. According to the Xinhua News Service, the whole city of Bujumbura has suffered from blackout. Burundi's Security Minister Gabriel Nizigama said the government will provide the homeless with food and money for burial and new house construction. Baku Earthquake 2014: Seismologist says more aftershocks possible in Azerbaijan

M 5.3 moderate earthquake shakes Azerbaijan today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 20 km S of Marazy and 84 km W of Baku. It was 30.4 miles deep. Tremor was well felt by the people of Baku  and Sumgait. Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan. Local medias are reporting aftershocks possible quoting officials at seismology and geodynamics department of Seismological Service at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Tokyo Snow Storm 2014 marked as the heaviest snowfall in 20 years!

Heavy snow storm in 20 years in Tokyo, Japan has claimed lives of five people and injured more than six hundred others, Xinhua reported. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, around 25 centimeters of snow has been recorded in Tokyo by Saturday night. The Japan Meteorological Agency has also issued the first heavy snowfall warning for central Tokyo in 13 years. Snow storm in Tokyo has even disrupted domestic flights and bullet trains. AccuWeather.com has described Tokyo snow storm 2014 as a rare event. Tokyo is a difficult place for snow due to the high peak of Mount Fuji, just to the west of the city. Quebec, Canada earthquake shakes Hemmingford and Sherington

M 3.1 earthquake shakes Quebec region, Natural Resource Canada reported. According to the Natural Resource Canada, the quake's epicenter was located 43 km ESE of Valleyfield and 46 km S of Montreal, QC. Earthquake was felt at Hemmingford and Sherington, QC. Mystery earth tremor shakes Ocean City, Maryland

A mystery earth tremor shook Ocean City, Maryland on Thursday morning. Tremors have been reported across Ocean City and the lower Delmarva Peninsula. However, no earthquakes in Ocean City, Maryland have been recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey even. According to the Maryland Geological Survey, the last earthquake in Ocean City occurred in 1928. The Maryland Emergency Management Agency expects it to be a sonic boom caused by the Navy test flights. 2.4 earthquake triggers fire in South Africa, 8 killed

Fire triggered by magnitude 2.4 earthquake at the Doornkop gold mine west of Johannesburg, South Africa has claimed lives of eight people. Nine mineworkers were missing earlier after the fire broke out on Tuesday night which damaged electric cables, triggering the blaze, Xinhua reported quoting the National Union of Mineworkers. One body is yet to be recovered. The tremor also triggered a rockfall about 1.7 kilometres underground at the Doornkop mine, west of Johannesburg. Landslide in Tinjomoyo, Banyumanik district of Indonesia has claimed life of a person, The Jakarta Post reported. Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding and landslide displacing thousands of people in Sawah Besar, Gayamsari districts. Landslides, floods triggered by tropical storm Kajiki kill 6 in Philippines

Landslides and floods triggered by tropical storm Kajiki (local name: Basyang) have claimed lives of at least six people and left five others missing, The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. Fatalities are from Cebu and Southern Leyte. Five persons are still missing in Cebu including a 25 years old Korean citizen. The NDRRMC said  tropical storm Kajiki affected a total of 42,987 people in nine different provinces of Philippines. Around 5,646 displaced people are currently living in 32 evacuation centers. Lixourion, Greece Earthquake 2014: Second strong earthquake in a week

M 6.1 very strong earthquake shakes Lixourion, Greece today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located just 12 km NW of Lixourion. It was 8.5 miles deep. Earthquake has caused serious damages in Lixouri, Greek radio said quoting Kefalonia Mayor Alexandros Parisis. Seismologists have urged people on the island to leave their houses temporarily. China Forest Fire Management issues red alert

A red alert has been issued by China Forest Fire Management (CFFM) following the forest fire in southern areas of the country. Extremely dangerous situation is predicted in Jiangxi, southeastern areas of Hunan, southwestern part of Fujian and Sichuan, northern Guangdong and northwestern Yunnan in the next two to three days., Xinhua reported quoting China Forest Fire Management (CFFM) Center. Mount Sinabung volcano eruption in Indonesia has claimed lives of at least 14 people and injured three others, Xinhua reported quoting the national disaster agency. Fatalities include four school children.
