Wellington storm believed to be worst in 37 years!

Latest storm in Wellington region of New Zealand has been described as the worst storm in 37 years by a scientist of National Institute for Weather and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

Stuff.Co.NZ has quoted the scientist Dr Mike Revell and described the Wellington storm as worst in 37 years.

More than 30,000 homes are without power across Wellington. All flights in and out of Wellington along with ferry and train services have been cancelled tonight.

Civil Defence emergency operation centres have been opened in Wellington, Porirua and Lower Hutt areas.

According to a Metservice severe weather forecaster, gust of 200 kmh has been recorded at Mount Kaukau.

Weather forecasters have predicted heavy snow for Canterbury and Kaikoura above 300 metres on Thursday night and Friday.

Severe Weather Warnings remained in place as LPA off the coast of Kaikoura is expected to bring heavy winds overnight.

A tornado also hit Waikato region of New Zealand yesterday. Flood plus 500 lightning strikes hit New Zealand in May 2013.
