Very strong earthquake near Guatemala city

M 6.2 very strong earthquake shakes Guatemala city today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter located 10 km ESE of Guatemala City.

M 6.2 very strong earthquake shakes Guatemala city today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 6 km NNW of San Jose Pinula and 10 km ESE of Guatemala City. It was 125 miles deep.

Following USGS Pager Map, light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Iztapa, Salama, Monjas, Guatemala City, Amatitlan, San Raimundo, Chimaltenango, Jalapa, Antigua Guatemala, Tapachula, Santa Cruz del Quiche, Coban and Escuintla.

Magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Guatemala city in 2012 killed more than 50 people. It was the strongest quake since the terrible earthquake that hit Guatemala in 1976.

Guatemala lies in a major fault zone, known as the Motagua and Chixoy-Polochic fault complex. The most destructive earthquake in recent Guatemalan history was the 1976 quake with a magnitude of 7.5 which killed 23,000 people.
