Recent World Disasters

Just south of Kaeo, Northland; source weatherwatch
  • Flooding in New Zealand
    -Worst hit by flood water is Kaeo, a small Northland town in New Zealand (video below)
    -The main roads in Ngunguru area closed because of flooding
    -Twin Bridges at Kawakawa closed due to rising flood waters
    -MetService has issued a severe weather warning in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Peninsula, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, and Taupo
    -Heavy rainfall,100 to 150mm expected,  in Northland (Kaikohe southwards)
  • Tornado in Platte, State of Nebraska, USA
    -Two people injured and several homes damaged
    -National Weather Service radar confirmed two tornadoes in North Platte area
    -The first tornado report came at 910 PM CDT 4 miles southwest of North Platte. Another tornado was reported near Lake Maloney (5 miles south of North Platte)
    -A shelter for victims has set up by the Red Cross at the North Platte Recreation Center
    Update
    -Four people injured by the storm
    -Numerous power poles snapped  and 15 rail cars overturned by the tornado as it moved across the Union Pacific Bailey Yards

  • M 5.5 strong shallow harmless sea quake in Samoa Islands Region (@ 12 km depth) with epicenter located 152 km SSE of Mata'utu, Ile Uvea, Wallis and Futuna, About 16,000 people will have felt just a weak shaking of MMI III
    23:46 UTC (local time Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:46 AM @ epicenter)
  • M 4.8 moderate earthquake near the Coast of Central Peru (@ 51 km depth) with epicenter located 35 km WNW of Huacho. Weak shaking will have experienced even in Lima, Peru
    23:21 UTC (local time Monday, March 19, 2012 at 06:21 PM @ epicenter)
  • M 4.9 moderate earthquake in Antofagasta, Chile (@ 73 km depth) with epicenter located 154 km SE  from Antofagasta. Weak shaking will have experienced in a vast area including parts of Atacama region
    21:52 UTC (local time Monday, March 19, 2012 at 06:52 PM @ epicenter)
  • M 5.5 moderate earthquake in New Guinea, Papua New Guinea (@ 115 km depth) with epicenter located 46 km SW Angoram. About 456,000 people will have experienced light shaking of MMI IV.  People in Angoram and Ambunti will have felt light shaking. Weak shaking will have by the people of Wewak, Wabag, Aitape, Mount Hagen, Madang, Ialibu, Mendi, Goroka and Kundiawa.
    Last strong earthquake of M 6.1 in 2005-06-04 killed one people in this region. Earthquakes with such strong magnitude are common in this region.

  • M 3.2 weak shallow earthquake in Southern California (@ 3 km depth) with epicenter located  13 km SSW from Seeley. It will have well felt by the people of Seeley, El Centro and Heber of Southern California.

  • M 5.0  moderate shallow earthquake jolts Minahasa, Sulawesi, Indonesia (@ 35 km depth) with epicenter located just 10 km NNW from Palu. Moderate shaking of MMI V will have felt by the people of Palu

  • Flooding in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, China
    -Snowmelt and heavy rainfall flooded about 600 homes along with evacuation of 300 people
    -687 livestock killed with 536 hectares of farmland flooded

Recent Cyclones
  • Summer storms in South Thailand
    -About 400 people affected and 87 houses destroyed
    -18 other injured after the roof of a rubber processing factory collapsed during the storm
    -Worst hit by storm was Thailand's northeastern Surin province

Other Disasters
  • Sandstorm in Saudi Arabia
    -Severe Sandstorm warning is issued in the northern and eastern regions and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
    -Most of  the residents of Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah are admitted in hospital after suffering from asthma attacks, allergies and respiratory illness
    -Below-zero temperatures in the northern areas of Tabuk, Turaif and Al Qurayat is forecast
    Update
    -Sandstorm disrupted air traffic in Yemen (Sanaa's international airport). At least two flights cancelled and several others either delayed or re-routed to Aden
    -The Saudi ministry of education announced the closure of schools in the north, east and south-west part
  • It's raining in Portugal, 53% of the Portuguese mainland was in extreme drought and 47% in severe drought. Portugal face worst drought in 70 years.
  • Massive brush fire in Yuma, State of Arizona, USA has prompted hundreds of evacuations. At least two homes have been destroyed. Three firefighters reported to be injured.
  • Forest fire in Mt Kenya National Park, Kenya destroyed thousands of acres of indigenous tree. It is continuing from nine days.
