South Shetland Islands earthquake measures 6.9 in magnitude

Earthquake's epicenter map of South Shetland islands January 23, 2021: A strong earthquake has been recorded in the South Shetland Islands in the Antarctica today. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake in the South Shetland Islands had a magnitude of 6.9 with a depth of 9.6 kilometers. Chile’s Interior Ministry issued a tsunami warning following the quake. Strong tremors were felt in the Chilean capital Santiago. Hundreds of people were ready to evacuate in the coastal region of La Serena after receiving evacuation message on their cellphone.  However, the authorities said it as a technical error and the locals were informed about the false alarm later. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center clarified there’s no tsunami threat to Caribbean coasts from the earthquake in South Shetland Islands today.

M 8.3 deadly earthquake triggers Tsunami from Chile, Tahiti to Hawaii, California

Magnitude 8.3 massive earthquake rattled Chile at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 46 km W of Illapel, Chile. It was 15.5 miles deep.

The Calbuco volcano in Chile has erupted for the first time in 42 years causing evacuation of thousands of people. Chile's Onemi emergency office has declared a red alert following the eruption at Calbuco volcano . About 4,000 people are far moved out of the area, an evacuation radius of 20 kilometers has been established and classes have been canceled in surrounding towns, Reuters reported.

Villarrica volcano eruption in Chile evacuates thousands

Volcano Villarrica eruption in Chile has sent a plume of ash and lava high into the sky in the early hours and put Chile on high alert. Over 4,000 people were evacuated overnight as a preventive measure, Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said Reuters. The Villarrica volcano erupted around 3 a.m. local time, according to the National Emergency Office, which issued a red alert and ordered evacuations. A column of ash and rock particles shot up to 3 km (nearly 2 miles) into the sky.

Chile Forest Fires 2014: 16 dead, 2,000 homes destroyed, emergency declared

Recent forest fires in Chile have claimed lives of at least 16 people and destroyed around 2,000 homes, Valparaiso's Emergency Committee said. Chile forest fires 2014 have destroyed some 756 hectares causing evacuations of 10,000 people, Valparaiso's Emergency Committee further added. According to the Associated Press, some 1,200 firefighters are struggling to control the forest fires in Chile. A state of emergency has been declared in Valparaiso. Chilean Earthquake 2014 creates Tsunami in Japan

Magnitude 8.2 earthquake in Chile has caused Tsunami in Japan. A tsunami of up to 40 centimeters has been observed at a port of Iwate Prefecture early Thursday morning, Xinhua reported. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami alert for Pacific coastal areas of Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, some parts of the Kanto region and the Izu and Ogasawara islands. According to the public broadcaster NHK, local authorities have issued evacuation advisories to more than 22,000 people living near the coastline in Iwate prefecture, northern Japan. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake created Tsunami up to 40.5 m in Japan. At least six people have confirmed dead in Chilean earthquake 2014. Most of the victims are killed by falling debris or heart attacks. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 95 km NW of Iquique. It was 7.7 miles deep. Strong earthquake strikes off Chilean coast: USGS

M 6.6 strong earthquake shakes coastal areas of Chile today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located to the south of Coquimbo and La Serena. It was 7.7 miles deep. The earthquake also made building sway in Chile's capital of Santiago. No damage or injuries have been reported. Chile, Argentina finally order evacuation around Copahue volcano, red alert issued

A red alert has been declared by Chilean and Argentine authorities and ordered the mandatory evacuation of a 25-km (15.5-mile) radius around the Copahue volcano. Around 2,240 people are expected to be evacuated in Chile alone. Note that the evacuation is obligatory, not voluntary. The evacuation could last about 48 hours, Emergency Office in Chile said. Similarly in Neuquen province of Argentina, some 900 people are ordered to evacuate the area. All schools are closed in the municipality. Forest fire in Valparaiso, Chile destroys 60 homes

Recent forest fire in Valparaiso, Chile has destroyed at least 60 homes, The Telegraph mentions. Around 150 families have been evacuated from the fire zone. Fire is burning on the La Cruz and Mariposas hills in the Chilean city of Valparaiso. According to the National Office of Emergencies, fire has burned an area of 60 hectares between the two hills among eucalyptus forests and pastureland.
