Major Natural Disasters Today
  • Wildfire in Western Australia
    -At least 95 homes have been destroyed by recent wildfire in remote Australian town of Yarloopn.
    -A lightning strike Wednesday evening local time triggered fire in the region.
  • Flooding in western Albania
    -Floods triggered by heavy rainfall have caused evacuations of around 500 families in western Albania.
    -Shkumbini River flooded early Thursday. Floods have also affected capital Tirana.
  • Avalanche in Gangapurna Mountain, Nepal
    -An avalanche has been reported on Gangapurna Mountain in Manang district of Nepal.
    -The residential area is far from the disaster site. No damage or injuries have been reported.
    -The mountain lies in Manang district of Nepal between Annapurna III and Tilocho Peak at an altitude of 7454m.

Recent Earthquakes
  • M 4.0 light earthquake in Uzbekistan (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 12 km ESE of Amir Timur. It will have been well felt by the people of Yangiyul, Zafar, Buka and Tashkent.

  • M 4.6 moderate earthquake in Bosnia and Herzegovina (@ 31 km depth) with epicenter located 4 km NE of Bileca. It will have been well felt by the people of Trebinje,  Niksic (Montenegro) and Dubrovnik (Croatia).

  • M 5.0 moderate earthquake in Afghanistan (@ 219 km depth) with epicenter located 32 km SSE of Jarm. Weak tremor will have been felt by the people of Kabul, Peshawar, Abottabad and Islamabad, Pakistan.

  • M 3.4 light earthquake in Oklahoma (@ 1 km depth) with epicenter located 16 km SSE of Medford. Weak shaking of MMI III will have been felt by the people of Enid, Ponca City and Arkansas City, Kansas.

  • M 5.0 moderate earthquake in Peru (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 94 km NNW of Macusani. Light to weak shaking will have been felt by the people of Paucartambo and Macusani.

  • M 5.6 strong earthquake in Chile (@ 31 km depth) with epicenter located 46 km W of Ovalle. Light shaking of MMI IV will have been felt by the people of Monte Patria, Coquimbo and La Serena.

Recent Flash Floods
  • Severe flood warnings in Scotland
    -The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued severe flood warnings for Inverurie and Kintore.
    -River Don is expected to bursts its bank as it reached the highest water level on record.
    -According to BBC, more than 20 Aberdeenshire schools will be closed or partially closed on Friday due to the severe conditions.

Recent Volcanic Activity
  • Kilauea volcano in the Hawaiian Islands
    -Eruptions continue at Kīlauea Volcano's summit and Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent on the East Rift Zone, U.S. Volcano Hazards Program mentioned.
    -No immediate threat to communities.

Recent Tropical Cyclones
  • Tropical Cyclone Pali
    -Tropical Cyclone Pali has became the earliest central Pacific tropical storm on record.
    -Pali formed between Kiribati and Marshall Islands, in the northern hemisphere.
    -Pali is currently about 1,300 kilometres south of Hawaii. This system is currently no threat to land.

Hail storm in Chennai: 3rd time in 5 years

Hail storm hit Ayanavaram, Chennai between 1.30pm and 1.45pm Friday afternoon. Nungambakkam recorded 3.5cm of rain and Meenambakkam 1.1cm, India Meteorological Department said. Last hail storm in Chennai was in September 6, 2011. This is the third hail storm in Chennai in last 5 years. No damage or injury have been reported from Chennai hail storm. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 60 km SE of Kegen and 227 km E Almaty . It was 6.8 miles deep. Following USGS, light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Kegen, Tyup, Karakol, Aksu, Zharkent and Kyzyl-Suu. People of Kapchagai, Yesik, Aral, Talghar and Almaty will have felt weak shaking of MMI III. Earthquake occurred in the border of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and China (Xinjiang).
