Nepal: Devastating Taplejung landslide kills 53

Landslide triggered by incessant rainfall in Taplejung, Nepal has claimed lives of at least 53 people.

Landslides have affected the entire area of Liwang, Khokling, Thinglabu and Lingtep VDCs, eKantipur reported. Some wards of Khalung and Khokling VDCs have also been affected.

As many as 12 people have sustained injury while some others have gone missing as three days of downpour triggered landslides in Taplejung.

Landslides have washed away more than two dozen houses in the six VDCs of Taplejung. Landslide has washed away a primary health care of Liwang-3. A Mewa river bridge joining Fakumba and Thinglabu has also been washed away

Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has directed the authorities to launch the rescue and relief operation in landslide-hit Taplejung district promptly, The Himalayan Times reported.

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of those who have lost their loved ones in the recent Taplejung landslides.

The District Administration Office has deployed 150 Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel to carry out rescue operations for Taplejung landslide.

Khokling:
Sabin Maaden (13), Basanta Rasaili (12), Mankumar B.K.
Lingtep: Manmaya Limbu (31), Bhim Bahadur Kedem Limbu (42), Chameli Kedem Limbu (3)
Liwang: Bhaktajung Limbu, Manmaya Limbu, Panchamaya Limbu, Shailendra Limbu, Chitmaya Limbu, Laxmimaya Limbu,
Thinglabu: Mankumar Limbu

Thukimwa area has been evacuated as a precaution measure and sheltered at V.D.C building and Tribhuwan Higher Secondary School.

At least seven people died in landslide disaster in Taplejung region of eastern Nepal in June 2013.
