It is important for countries to develop emergency preparedness to be much safer and sustain less damage during an emergency situation caused by natural disasters, The World Health Organization’s Southeast Asia Region Office (WHO SEARO) said Tuesday.
"Preparedness is the key to minimize the impact of disasters, measuring preparedness is a sound basis for addressing risks, no matter what the cause," Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director for southeast Asia region at the World Health Organisation, said in a statement.
Singh pointed out the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and linked it as a turning point for the world to be more aware of emergency preparedness, helpful to carry out emergency responses to similar natural disasters anywhere and at any time.
Since the very natural disaster, WHO SEARO together with WHO representatives in tsunami-affected countries have cooperated to develop a disaster preparedness plan for an emergency situation and to boost emergency response capacity for similar disasters, the statement has mentioned.
