Blizzards and avalanches in Western Nepal kill 32, more than 118 rescued

The death toll due to blizzards and avalanches in Myagdi, Manang and Mustang has climbed to 32, The Himalayan Times reported. More than 118 persons who had been trapped have been rescued from various areas.

Prime Minister, Sushil Koirala has directed the National Emergency Rescue Center to immediately move into action to rescue the victims and provide them with relief assistance in the Cabinet meeting.

Heavy snowstorm has claimed lives of at least 21 people, including 12 foreigners and left several missing in Manang, Mustang and Myagdi districts of Western Nepal.

Snowfall in Mustang district on Tuesday night killed 16 persons and injured as many as 19 others. Among the deceased are nine Nepalis, three Polish, three Israeli and one Vietnamese tourist, Nepal Republic Media has written quoting the Mustang Chief District Officer, Baburam Bhandari.

Disaster occurred at an altitude of 5,000 meters while they were coming down to Muktinath after crossing Thorong Pass along Annapurna Circuit Trekking.

Similarly, snowfall in Manang district has claimed lives of five foreigners including four Canadians and one Indian national.

Five people, including two Slovakian trekkers, have been missing in Dhaulagiri region in Myagdi district since Tuesday, the ekantipur reported.

The period between October and November is considered the peak tourist season in Manang and Mustang.

Nepali Army (NA) has been working in the rescue operations.

Three people were found dead in an avalanche in Nar-4 village in Manang district yesterday. With this, the snow blizzard toll reaches 24 in the past two days.

The snowstorms and avalanches were caused by a cyclone that hit neighboring India a few days ago. Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) had issued snowfall warning in upper himalayan region of Nepal a day before.

Typhoon Kompasu kills 11 in Philippines

October 12, 2021: Typhoon Kompasu (called "Maring" in Philippines) has claimed lives of eleven people and left seven others missing in Philippines . More than 6,500 villagers have been evacuated from flood affected areas. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), fatalities have been reported from Benguet, Cagayan and Palawan province. The Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) was on ALERT STATUS RED since the start of the natural disaster . According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), Kompasu will make landfall in upper Vietnam on Wednesday or Thursday. Heavy rain is expected in Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon and Bueng Kan provinces in Thailand.
