Tropical Storm Fung-Wong in Philippines leaves 5 dead, 710,000 displaced

Tropical Storm Fung-Wong (local name Mario) has left at least five people dead and displaced more than 710,000 people in Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

At least 105 localities in Metro Manila, and in Regions 1, 3, 4A, and 4-B were reported flooded, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes, Manila Bulletin mentioned quoting the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director Alexander Pama.

According to the Inquirer News, Cebu City has been placed under a state of calamity. Marikina City was one of the hardest hit areas, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said. The MMDA had  set up a command post and evacuation center in Tumana, Marikina, to speed up rescue operations in the city as water rose in the  Marikina River.

Tropical Storm Fung-Wong is currently moving toward Taiwan. Three counties in southern Taiwan have decided to close offices and schools from Saturday night. People have piled up flood sandbags outside their houses in  Kaohsiung.

Tropical Storm Fung-wong (local name Mario), the sixteenth named storm of the 2014 typhoon season, made severe flooding over Luzon, especially Metro Manila.
