Massive flooding in Mahakali River of Nepal has claimed lives of atleast eight people and submerged more than 500 houses, Republica has reported quoting the Far-Western Regional Police Office, Dipayal.
Floods in the Mahakali River caused by three days of incessant rainfall have claimed lives of two each from Baitadi, Doti, Kanchanpur and one each from Dadeldhura and Kailali.
Flash floods have also displaced the Area Police Office and the Nepal Army base camp in Jogbudha.
Water level in the Mahakali River, which was just at 275,480 cusec on Saturday evening, rose to 326,000 cusec on Sunday. This is the highest level of water recorded this year so far in Mahakali River.
The Banbasa bridge has been closed since Saturday morning for vehicles due to the swollen Mahakali river.
Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), with support from Mercy Corps, an INGO that has been supporting disaster preparedness programs in Nepal has developed early warning system in the Mahakali River basin this year. The District Administration Office (DAO) had declared flood emergency following floods in Mahakali river last year.
