Auckland has been rattled by two light earthquakes today (17/03/13). The epicenter is located 15 km north-east of Auckland, New Zealand.

This earthquake is getting huge place on social networks mainly on Facebook and Twitter. Kerry Sorensen-Tyrer from Auckland has commented on our facebook page as "Super tiny quake - so don't worry!!!! I think it's being over dramatized!" In another comment she has added "Why is this being posted on this site - when it was not a disaster - this site should be kept for true disasters and not ones that we're all having a laugh about - as is the case here in akld!!
That's true that the earthquake is over dramatized. The earthquake is not large and it is certain that it wouldn't cause major damage but this type of earthquakes are rare in Auckland. There are only 36 earthquakes in Auckland greater than magnitude three since 1830! ... data is enough to show why people reacting so much!!

-Tremors lasted from 30 second to half a minute.
-Looking Auckland earthquake history and other reports, earthquakes are felt on average every three to five years in Auckland. There are only 36 earthquakes in Auckland greater than magnitude three since 1830! Did you feel this earthquake? Kindly comment below.
About 2007 Auckland earthquake:
-Magnitude 4.5 earthquake was recorded in Auckland in 2007. Three light to moderate earthquakes were recorded within three hours.
-It was the largest earthquake in Auckland since 1970!

Two light earthquakes have shaken New Zealand today with epicenter located 15 km north-east of Auckland. A magnitude 3.1 hit Auckland which was followed by another earthquake five minutes later with magnitude 3.9. Later quake struck at 4.05pm at a depth of 6 km.
According to Geo Net both earthquakes have the epicenter in the middle of Motutapu Island in the Hauraki Gulf, near the volcanic island of Rangitoto.
