M 5.6 strong shallow earthquake shakes Taiwan today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 36 km NNW from Hua-lien. It was 6.0 miles deep.

Following USGS Pager Map, Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Hualian, Buli, Yilan, Miaoli, Fengyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Banqiao and Taipei. People of Tainan and Kaohsiung will have weak shaking of MMI III.

The 921 earthquake, which struck on September 21, 1999 killed 2,415 people. The 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake is the deadliest earthquake in Taiwan. Earthquake claimed 3,276 lives.
