M 5.0 moderate earthquake shakes Madhya Pradesh, India today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 49 km S Rewa and 155 km S Allahabad. It was 9.2 miles deep.

Indian seismological center mentions magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Shahdol region of Madya Pradesh.
Tremor was well felt in eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The closest residential area is Beohari (Pop. 22,107) which is just 9 km far where light shaking of MMI IV will have been felt. Populated area Rewa is 49 km far. Earthquake is not strong enough to cause damage.

Jabalpur is 158 km far from the epicenter. Jabalpur, same area where magnitude 6.0 earthquake in 1997 caused severe damage. The 1997 Jabalpur earthquake was caused due to the presence of Narmada Fault which killed 39 people.

Narmada-Son South Fault zone runs from Khargaon in western Madhya Pradesh in an east-northeasterly direction right upto the Rihand reservoir in southern Jharkhand in the east.

Largest instrumented earthquake in Madhya Pradesh was recorded on 02 June 1927 in Umaria area of Madhya Pradesh, India. It was of magnitude 6.4

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
