Earthquakes trend in 2012
If we look the data from our page recent earthquake in Nepal, earthquakes are common either in eastern or western region (no moderate earthquake in central region). High hilly regions are comparatively more seismically active. If we talk about the present epicenter location (western off Pokhara to far western) which is infact more active from the starting of 2012, shows clear trend of increasing number of moderate earthquakes. This is the Ninth moderate earthquake whose epicenter is off Pokhara to far western development region. Three earthquakes of magnitude 5.0, 4.8 and 4.2 occurred in the same region of Rukum a week before. Six quakes are off Siraha to Nepal-India border, most of them adjoin to Sikkim. Nepal-India area is continuously being hit after the major quake in September 2011.
Note that earthquake on Sunday, 18 September 2011 centered within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, near the border of Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim killed at least 111 people.
Seismicity in the Himalaya dominantly results from the continental collision of the India and Eurasia plates, which are converging at a relative rate of 40-50 mm/yr.
A research has shown that Nepal is one of the 20 most disaster prone countries in the world with a high level of exposure to multiple hazards, most prominently earthquakes.
