Recent Natural Disasters

• Flooding in Beijing, China

  

  Soldiers evacuating students in Fangshan District of Beijing; Source Xinhua

  -Death toll from Beijing floods has risen to 37.
  -More than 50,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Beijing, China.
  -Landslides killed three in Fangshan region of Beijing.
  -About 500 outbound flights were cancelled and at least 80,000 passengers stranded.
  -It is the heaviest rainstorm in six decades in Beijing. Flooding has caused 10 billion economic loss and affected area of ​​16,000 km2 so far.
• Wildfire in Spain

  

  Firefighters battling the blaze close to the Spanish-French border; Source news.sky.com

  -Three killed and about 100 injured in wildfire in northeastern Spain.
  -Fire that broke out near the town of La Jonquera just across the border with France has spread about 17,000 acres.
  -About 80 firefighting brigades from Spain and France are currently fighting the wildfire.
  Update
  -Death toll from Spain wildfire has risen to 4.
  -The fire is burning close to the border with France and includes the Costa Brava which is one of the most popular beach destinations in Spain.

• M 4.8 moderate earthquake in Uzbekistan (@ 6 km depth) with epicenter located just 14 km SW Samarkand. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Charxin  and Samarkand.

• M 5.2 moderate shallow earthquake near the North Coast of Papua, Indonesia (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 94 km N of Nabire. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Manokwari, Tual and Sorong.

Flooding List

• Flooding in Yavatmal, India
  -More than 30 villages affected by continuous rainstorm in Yavatmal, Maharashtra.
  -People from eight villages have been shifted to the safer places.
  -The bridge between Yavatmal and Arni at Yeola village also reported to be destroyed. 
• Flooding in North Islands, New Zealand
  -Floodwaters cut off State Highway 2 to the west and south of Waihi.
  -Local Met Service has issued severe weather watch for Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay.
  -People living near Piako, Waihou and Waitoa rivers are on high alert.
• Flooding in Las Vegas, United States
  -Minor flooding reported in the southeast part of the Las Vegas.
  -Flooding reported near Sam Boyd Stadium as well as areas in Henderson.

Tropical Cyclone List

• Tropical Storm Vicente
  -As of 01:00 UTC, Tropical storm 09w (Vicente) was located approximately 175 nm south of Hong Kong.
  -Vicente is expected to become a category 1 cyclone by early tomorrow (Tuesday).
  Update
  -At least seven people reported to be injured due to T.S. Vicente.
  -As of 13:50 UTC, Vicente was moving at the speed of 20 km/hr toward the southern Chinese coast and is expected to pass 100 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong overnight.
  -Typhoon warning level raised to eight, two below the most severe level.

  -Tornado reported about five miles south of Smeaton, Canada.
  -Tornado also destroyed some houses in the area.
