Cyclone Harold kills 7 and leaves 21 missing in Solomon Islands

April 6, 2020: Cyclone Harold has claimed lives of at least seven people and left 21 other missing across Solomon Islands, after a passenger ferry was washed away due to storm surge. Cyclone Harold is currently a category five storm - the most severe. Also Cyclone Harold has become the strongest cyclone to affect Vanuatu since Cyclone Pam in 2015 .  Cyclone Harold made landfall over Vanuatu's southwest coast of Espiritu Santo Island today. At 01:00 UTC, Cyclone Harold's centre was located inland over Espiritu Santo approximately 45 km west of Luganville (town of Vanuatu). The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department, Port Vila has issued red alert for Sanma, Penama and Malampa provinces following tropical cyclone Harold . Also yellow alert has been issued for Torba and Shefa provinces. Flood in Fiji kills three

March 22, 2020: Flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has claimed lives of at least three people. Hundreds of people were stranded in Nausori, Central Division, on the island of Viti Levu. Damaging floods have been reported in Navua and capital Suva. Heavy downpours also triggered mudslides at a quarry in Mau, Namosi. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a flood warning for the Rakiraki town river.

Tropical Cyclone Tino to affect Fiji and Tonga

January 14, 2020: A storm in the Pacific is expected to become a tropical cyclone 'Tino' by Wednesday or Thursday. A tropical disturbance is located 1,670 km to the north-west of Fiji or 760 kilometres west-northwest of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu. The system is expected to intensify into Tropical Cyclone Tino on 15 January 2020. Warnings are being issued in Fiji and Tonga with fears both islands are in line to be directly hit by a tropical cyclone. The system is anticipated to enter Fijian waters on January 17, 2020.

Tropical Cyclone Pola upgraded to category 3, bringing severe weather to Fiji and Tonga

February 27, 2019: Tropical Cyclone Pola has been upgraded to a severe category 3 system as it continues to move south southwest between Tonga and Fiji. Tropical Cyclone Pola is currently a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone, based on the Fiji tropical scale, with winds equal to a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. Tropical Cyclone Pola is currently located 275km west northwest of Nuku'alofa, moving south-southwest at 20km/hr.

Cyclone Donna forms NE of Vanuatu, poses no threat to Fiji

May 3, 2017: Pacific forecasters have named a Category 1 cyclone as Donna which formed this evening northeast of Vanuatu, Donna. Fiji Meteorological Service senior forecaster Stephen Meke said the system was forecast to move over Vanuatu within the next two days.

Tropical Cyclone Winston prompts emergency in Fiji; 20 confirmed dead

An aerial view of Cyclone Winston damage in Fiji (NZDF/Facebook via Stuff) A Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston has claimed lives of atleast 20 people in Fiji , making a record of the strongest landfalling tropical cyclone in the South Pacific archipelago.  Tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall along the north coast of Fiji's Viti Levu Saturday evening with packing estimated maximum sustained winds of 180 mph, the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) confirmed.

Fiji issues flood warnings as Cyclone Winston intensifies

Fiji Meteorological Service issued at 07:00 UTC Thursday 11 February 2016 Fiji Meteorological Service has issued flood warning for all low lying areas along Rakiraki river including Rakiraki town. In a special weather bulletin issued at 09:30 pm Thursday, Met Service said that a Category 1 Tropical Cyclone Winston was located about 730 km West-SouthWest of Rotuma and 650 km West-NorthWest of Nadi. The system is expected to bring heavy rainfall in the region.

Mysterious tremors in Kadavu, Fiji develop cracks

Multiple mysterious tremors were experienced past week in the district of Nakasaleka and Rakiraki in Kadavu, Fiji. Several cracks have been observed on walls of hall and some houses in Nakasaleka, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation has mentioned.

Tropical Cyclone Ian prompts hurricane warning in Vava'u, Tonga

A hurricane warning has been issued for the Vava'u group in Tonga following tropical cyclone Ian, the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Center said in its latest update. Tropical cyclone Ian updates issued at 4:30 Am Friday morning (January 10, 2014) has kept Ha'apai and Niuafo'ou under gale warning. A storm alert remains in force for the Ha'apai group. Similarly, a tropical cyclone alert remains in force for Tongatapu and 'Eua. Severe tropical cyclone Ian, a category four storm was located 170 km South-SouthWest of Niuafo'Ou and 295 km NorthWest of Vava'U at 1:00 AM Friday morning. Following current track, Tropical cyclone Ian is predicted to bring destructive storm force winds to the Vava'U group in the next 12-18 hours followed by a very destructive hurricane force winds in the next 18-24 hours. The government of Tonga held an emergency meeting and is currently monitoring the cyclone. The Emergency Operation Centres have been activated.
