Kathmandu earthquake 2020: M5.3 earthquake shakes Nepal and India

May 12, 20202: Magnitude 5.3 moderate earthquake has been recorded in Dolakha, Nepal today with tremor even felt in several areas of Bihar, India at 11:53 pm local time.

According to the Nepal's National Seismological Center, the earthquake's epicenter was located around Jugu area of Dolakha district along Jiri-Khadichaur Highway. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth.

People of Kathmandu valley reported of light to weak shaking of MMI III-IV. The tremor was felt as far as Hetauda and Birgunj. 

People from several areas of Bihar, Indian also reported about a jolt felt at the same time. Most of the earthquake felt reports were received from Patna and Muzaffarpur.

No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the seismicity in the Himalaya dominantly results from the continental collision of the India and Eurasia plates. Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepal in 2015 killed nearly 9,000 people.
