Krakatoa eruption 2020: Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano erupts

April 11, 2020: The world-famous Krakatoa volcano, Anak Krakatau, has erupted with huge plume of smoke and ash, the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation said.

The Anak Krakatau volcano eruption started on Friday at 10:35pm local time. The Krakatoa volcano spewed plumes of ash 15km into the air.

According to the media reports, many residents in Jakarta and West Java heard loud thunder-like sounds, believed to be from the volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau.

The eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 killed more than 36,000 people. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa destroyed more than 70% of the island of Krakatoa and its surrounding archipelago.
